Okay, so I am buying a new condo, and the wiring is such that I have to have a flat panel tv to hang over the fireplace in the living room. I have always been a bit negative about flat panels, but now I have to take the plunge. I am thinking probably LCD because of glare issues, but I was hoping there might be some people in here who have already gone through this whole exercise who might have advice. Thus, if anybody else has opinions on the relative merits of lcd versus plasma, I would appreciate the input. Further, assuming lcd, is 1080p really necessary? I cannot tell the difference in the store myself, but I am wondering if I am missing something.

Plasma is a pain in the ass. It looks great when you first get it, but over time it fades, is susceptible to burn in, and sometimes even needs to be recharged.

I'd go with LCD if I were choosing between the two.

However, take a close look at DLP as well. Thats what I ended up getting for my house, and it's great. Colors are great, no glare, equally sharp from the side, no "screen" effect......

DLP is definitely best, but you can't hang it above the fireplace, so it is not an option. I have to stick with a flat panel.

We bought an LCD-HD set (Aquos, by Sharp) several months ago, and have been very pleased with its performance.

1080p only matters if you are going to get HD-TV from your cable provider or the new high end video equipment like HD-DVD or BluRay. Personally, I'd wait on the HD-DVD and BluRay because there is a format war brewing and you don't want to be stuck with Betamax v2007.

However, you might want to go ahead and get a TV with the 1080p capability now, even if you don't plan on having any of that stuff now or in the next couple of years. I look at buying a TV as a long term investment because they can last a long time. It would suck to save a few bucks now and need to buy a new one a couple of years from now.

I have two other rooms in the condo where a flat panel is wired, so I was thinking that even if I go lower res now, I can just shift that t.v. over a couple of years from now to one of those rooms and buy a better t.v. for the living room at that point, but I am betting I go with 1080p anyway (although there is a higher res format due out within a year or so).

Very true, unless you wanted to spend a bit more and hedge your bets with this LG unit that plays both formats.

I work for an AV company <commercial stuff only> and can tell you that right now is a great time to get 50" Plasma's.

The experts at my company go back and forth on Plasma vs LCD quality vs price. VisualAPex is a dirt cheap web dealer <remember no sales tax for purchases over the web> but they'll nail you for shipping so have them ship on your own UPS account if you can and don't <DON'T> buy any accessories through them.

Not that dlp is chopped liver, I prefer lcd and plasma over it. and 1080 over 720 just seems like very little marginal diff as well...Now, that said plasma looks the best to me, but aren't there longevity issues burn in, and other issues with plasma. Lcd technology has been around longer, and suffers no burn in. Let us know which you decide on.

Dangerfield, plasma has far better color than LCD, and burn in on plasmas is much less of a problem than before, but lcd lasts at least twice as long, and probably more. Plasmas also have huge glare issues, and the new condo has about 55 continuous feet of 9.5 feet high windows in the living room, so glare is a concern. LCD has higher resolution, but it does not have as good a colors, and it has more trouble with fast motion than does plasma. Also, LCD's cost more in the initial investment.

Ultimately, LCD technology is probably going to be the dominant medium, but plasma was the first flat screen t.v., and it seems to be slightly ahead of LCD in overall appearance right now. All that being said, good versions of either have amazing pictures, and I am about 90% sold on LCD. I will keep everybody posted on what I finally select.

If you want some really cool graphics, Albert would recommend LSD over LCD.

We're not rich, McCray, just old. They give us money to compensate for all the gray hair and wrinkles...

I hear the govt just pass some kind of mandate saying that all analog tv broadcasting was to cease in the next two years.... your 10 year old shitty tvs may be scrap at that point as will any antenna's mounted to your roofs. All so the govt can make $70B auctioning off the bandwidth.

This has been known for some years now. However, this won't affect anyone with cable or satellite--only those who are still only getting broadcast. And those people will be able to buy a set-top converter, but what's the point?

I have a 19 inch regular tv, and a 5 inch black and white model that I bought for $1 at an estate sale.

I also don't own a cell phone.

And I still have a turntable.

BTW my company just installed a 103" plasma in our training room this morning.

We are the only dealers in the valley to have one and it is just crazy to look at.

I purchased a 46", 1080p, JVC LCD from BB in mid-December. However, I cancelled the order two days before it was to be delivered. It bothered me paying $2400 fo a television. I've decided to wait until the end of this year when prices will be down and quality up. I was really looking forward to watching the Dbacks on a HD big screen TV (Also the Louis Vuitton Cup and America's Cup races this Spring from Valencia, Spain).

I believe that still affects 15% of the population which is notable.

At the rate things have gotten cheaper and better, you could be waiting a while before it bottoms out.
