Does the deferral of a boatload of Johnson's salary from this year to later years now enable us to keep Eric Byrnes rather than play Scott Hairston?
And is that part of the reason for they did the salary deferral? |

Regardless, EB needs to be moved, for a bag of balls if nothing else. Just escaping his arb costs should be enough of an incentive to move him.

Yeah, "enable us." Don't take that to mean I want that to happen, though. I'm just thinking that's what Melvin, Moorad and Kendrick want.
This wonderful trade is already paying dividends. :( |

The point is that they're NOT going to trade him. That''s why they deferred Johnson's salary.
Because of the Johnson trade, we're now using money in future years - when we should be SERIOUS contenders - for Eric Byrnes. |

Luckily due to our young, cheap players we should be OK financially in 08, 09 & 10, even with the deferrals.
I think the bigger problem will be pitching availability vs $$ cost. |

Exactly. We'll be paying Eric Bynres $5 Million that should have gone toward pitching in future years when we REALLY NEED IT.

I think I said that wrong. What I'm trying to say is that from 08-10 we could come up with 18MM/yr if we had to, but there aren't any FA pitchers that will likely hit that range that we'd want to have.
For example we probably won't get Zambrano and in 09 we'll likely not get Santana <I know both with probably exceed the poultry 18MM/yr>. |

It would seem that the FO is worried about our SP's. Primarily EdGon. If they believed our SP's to be good enough to contribute, the RJ deal would not have happened. They woulda gone with EdGon and another. Now it seems that they're just hoping to get one of them to contribute. And if that's the case, why didn't we include Nippert for more $$?

This has probably been gone over before but no arbitrator is gonna more than double a guy like Byrnes' salary. Considering he made $2.25M in 2006, I assume they'll avoi arbitration with a salary between 3.75 and 4M. I agree it'd be great to trade him though.

At a news conference Monday in Yankee Stadium, new Yankees pitcher Kei Igawa said he felt "a great sadness" about the prospect of not being Johnson's teammate, but no added pressure because of the left-hander's impending departure.
"Regardless of who's here, there's going to be questions in our rotation," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "They're fair questions." |
