Does the deferral of a boatload of Johnson's salary from this year to later years now enable us to keep Eric Byrnes rather than play Scott Hairston?

And is that part of the reason for they did the salary deferral?

The extra money could help the Diamondbacks sign someone like Orlando Hudson to a multiyear contract. Laughing

Regardless, EB needs to be moved, for a bag of balls if nothing else. Just escaping his arb costs should be enough of an incentive to move him.

Free Scott Hairston.

Yeah, "enable us." Don't take that to mean I want that to happen, though. I'm just thinking that's what Melvin, Moorad and Kendrick want.

This wonderful trade is already paying dividends. :(

If they did trade <dump> Byrnes it would save us just about as much as RJ cost us this year <in dollars>.

Which is reason enough to trade him for whatever we can get for him.

The point is that they're NOT going to trade him. That''s why they deferred Johnson's salary.

Because of the Johnson trade, we're now using money in future years - when we should be SERIOUS contenders - for Eric Byrnes.

Luckily due to our young, cheap players we should be OK financially in 08, 09 & 10, even with the deferrals.

I think the bigger problem will be pitching availability vs $$ cost.

Exactly. We'll be paying Eric Bynres $5 Million that should have gone toward pitching in future years when we REALLY NEED IT.

Because of the Johnson trade.

I'm sure, like in most businesses, these overides will be past on to the consumer. Soon we'll be paying $40 a ticket and $10 for beer---oh, wait a minute...

I think I said that wrong. What I'm trying to say is that from 08-10 we could come up with 18MM/yr if we had to, but there aren't any FA pitchers that will likely hit that range that we'd want to have.

For example we probably won't get Zambrano and in 09 we'll likely not get Santana <I know both with probably exceed the poultry 18MM/yr>.

Interesting post on mlbtraderumors.com

Quote:
The Johnson acquisition will create a fierce spring training competition for Arizona's fifth starter job this year. Juan Cruz, Dana Eveland, Edgar Gonzalez, Enrique Gonzalez, and Dustin Nippert will fight for the vacancy. That group of fifth starter candidates could outpitch some teams' rotations (ahem, Washington).

After all of this RJ talk I'd been filling pretty down on our pitching prospects. This makes me feel a little better.

It would seem that the FO is worried about our SP's. Primarily EdGon. If they believed our SP's to be good enough to contribute, the RJ deal would not have happened. They woulda gone with EdGon and another. Now it seems that they're just hoping to get one of them to contribute. And if that's the case, why didn't we include Nippert for more $$?

This has probably been gone over before but no arbitrator is gonna more than double a guy like Byrnes' salary. Considering he made $2.25M in 2006, I assume they'll avoi arbitration with a salary between 3.75 and 4M. I agree it'd be great to trade him though.

Physical completed. Big press conference to announce Big Unit tomorrow at 1:00 MST at Chase Field.

CBS SportsLine tonight wrote:
PHOENIX -- Randy Johnson took his physical Monday, and the Arizona Diamondbacks scheduled a Tuesday news conference as their deal to reacquire the Big Unit from the New York Yankees neared completion.

Not that he needs an introduction. The Big Unit's best years were in Arizona, where he was 103-49 in six seasons and won four Cy Young Awards before going to the Yankees in a trade he sought in 2005.

After two difficult seasons in New York, Johnson returns to the Diamondbacks with a two-year, $26 million contract. The 43-year-old left-hander, who is waiving his no-trade clause, is being acquired for right-handed reliever Luis Vizcaino and minor league right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.

New York also agreed to pay $2 million of Johnson's salary this year. Because of the cash involved, the deal is subject to approval by commissioner Bud Selig.

Although the Diamondbacks made no comment on the physical, the team scheduled a 3 p.m. EST news conference in the home clubhouse at Chase Field. The news conference didn't mention Johnson by name, but Arizona already had confirmed agreements in principal with the Yankees last Thursday and with Johnson on Sunday, so the subject was clear.

At a news conference Monday in Yankee Stadium, new Yankees pitcher Kei Igawa said he felt "a great sadness" about the prospect of not being Johnson's teammate, but no added pressure because of the left-hander's impending departure.

"Regardless of who's here, there's going to be questions in our rotation," Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said. "They're fair questions."

D-Backs manager Bob Melvin said, “You get a guy who's going to give you 200 innings of work and about 17 wins.”

Guess he hasn't read shoe's projections yet. Laughing Hope Bob's right.

Johnson may not be available until the middle of April, perhaps May, according to a source familiar with Johnson’s recovery process.

Anyone want to change their vote in the poll about the bet?

If I were voting to win, that would be the smart $$ ... but a "Levski vote" is a "heart" vote... so "nope" Cool
