Could be humorous to re-run this poll just to see the difference in votes.

Coming of age is when a young person ascends from adolescence to adulthood. Bob Melvin came of age years ago. Laughing

I'm certain that some could argue that prior to this season Bob Melvin had been managing like an adolescent.

Bob Melvin's chances of becoming MoY is getting a serious boost with all these come from behind wins lately.

Between Melvin, Price, and the relievers, the bullpen is going as good as it has all year.

I'm starting to wonder if the bats have finally worked through the Seizer effect?

Well, well, well...I think it may be time for the "No Chance in Hell" voters to eat a little crow.

LOL

By his own admission, Arizona third baseman Mark Reynolds' confidence was sinking faster than his batting average this summer when he received a much-needed vote of confidence from his manager, Bob Melvin.

"He kept telling me I was the third baseman and they were going with me and not going to worry about anything," Reynolds said, noting a midsummer slump where he hit just .162 in June and .194 in July.

"So that gave me the confidence to go out and perform. Even if I went 0-for-4, I knew that I would still be playing. He's been the key component to my success this year."

"He never loses confidence, even when you're struggling," said Upton. "He allows us to be aggressive and play our game. I think that's the beauty of being young and being aggressive. When you have a manager who will recognize and who will let you be aggressive, it's great."

It's too bad Scott Hairston and Carlos Quentin can't say the same!

And 6 months later Carlos Quentin is still a head case and looking at shoulder surgery during the offseason.

Until he changes his perfectionist outlook towards his hitting, he's going to continue to overlook his successes at the major league level and continue to dwell on his failures. Which will continue to prolong slumps in the early part of a career, while he constantly beats himself up telling himself things like "I suck", "I'm lost", "I don't have a clue."

Character issues do play a big part.....

I recall Mike Rizzo telling how they decided to bring Conor up before Carlos (both were debated at the time) because they felt that Conor would better adjust to the majors because he wouldn't be as hard on himself when he met failures.

I believe Carlos will adjust eventually. He just needs a team that will leave him alone for a full season and let him hack it out of his mess. Unfortunately, he won't get that opportunity in AZ any longer. It really is best for all parties involved if the Dbacks can trade him to a team that needs a right fielder, and hopefully we can get someone decent back

Back to the original point of this thread.

Clint Hurdle has gotten a lot of national attention with the Rockies surge into the post season. Even though the Rockies had the hitting that other division managers envied coming into the season, suddenly its like Hurdle is getting credit for the remarkable job he's done.

Ironically, had Melvin opted to not rest some starters over the weekend, Sunday's win by the Rockies may have turned out to be a season ending loss.

Melvin's lone mistake during the first round of the playoffs, if it can be considered a mistake, was perhaps leaving Davis in one batter too long, before pulling him in favor of Juan Cruz.

Indeed, my only problem with Melvin in the series against CHI was leaving Davis in to face Jones. On the one hand, Jones is a lefty, so you get the LHP-LHB matchup, but on the other hand, Davis was spent by then, he couldn't find the strike zone, and he hadn't retired Jones at all in the previous at bats.

The correct thing to do in that situation, imho, was to bring in Slaten to face Jones. Why? You still get the lefty-lefty matchup, but Slaten throws harder, was fresh, and could've arguably done a better job against Jones. Additionally, even if Jones had gotten on base, the two biggest bats on the bench that Lou had were lefties: Ward and Floyd.

It's a non-issue now because the Dbacks had an 8-2 lead, but if the game were closer, you really wouldn't want to have Ward or Floyd facing Cruz.

2 problems with that, although the strategy would be sound.

1) Melvin started the inning with nobody warming in the pen, and was actually late in getting Cruz ready.

2) Melvin probably doesn't like to burn his lone lefty in a 6th inning situation.

Also Peter Woodfork has been contacted by the Cards about their GM post.

Welcome news after a pretty dark day.... esp. with Josh.

Not surprised about Cards interest in Peter Woodfork. From what I've read about their situation, the Cards owners want to go to a "grow your own" organization with a leaner salary base.

Robby Hammock in to pinch run for Tony Clark.

This season ended with that decision.
