Hmmm, wonder who we'd get from the Nats for him...
This from the Boston.com
http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/articles/2007/08/17/pena_goes_to_nationals/
According to one source with direct knowledge of the deal, the player the Sox will receive is in another organization: Chris Carter, a lefthanded-hitting first baseman and former Stanford star who is batting .328 with 18 home runs and 81 RBIs for Tucson, Arizona's Triple A affiliate. For Carter to come to the Red Sox from Washington, of course, the Nationals would first have to trade for him. Washington GM Jim Bowden would not comment last night through a Nationals spokesman.
From Rotoworld -
Chris Carter-1B-Diamondbacks Aug. 18 - 12:01 pm et
According to the Boston Globe, the Red Sox might be getting Arizona's Chris Carter from the Nationals in return for Wily Mo Pena.
Leave it to the Red Sox to try to turn a seemingly minor deal into a three-way trade. Carter, who turns 25 next month, is batting .328/.385/.531 for Triple-A Tucson. The first baseman is expendable in Arizona, so the Nationals might have a deal in place to get him in return for a pitching prospect. It's unclear whether the trade has any chance of being completed now or if it will have to wait until October, when waivers with no longer be a factor. |

See, it's a good thing we already have Livo or JB would trade Carter for him. |

With the ties that bind these three teams together, I guess some sort of a 3 way deal isn't all that shocking. |

Jay Bergmann?
He has been on the dl since July 24 with a hammie. He had 3 or 4 rough outings his last times out but was pitching well before that. Pitchers get dead arm for a time during the season and bounce back.
He is 6'4" 185, 25 years. His k numbers for the minors are not impressive overall, but they are better than 1/ip in the last two or three years. Control issues as we saw in his start against us, but still a realivley decent k/w.
If he is healthy, he could plug in now. It looks like he is rehabbing in the GCL. |

You know I thought Bergmann was too much for Carter. Thinking about it, there is the issue of waivers on Bergmann. I don't know his status. He could come as a PTBNL after the season I suppose.

oh, ok....i was factoring a nice power bat would be worth more than one pitcher

You may be right. That's why I put the smiley. Normally, I'd agree with you, but pitching has become such a premium item, I think the prices have changed. Also Carter is still just a prospect (not that Bergmann is that much more advanced) and is supposedly weak on D. An interesting comparison.

Trade is already done. It does not appear we will be a part of it. |

we could still be in it. The PTBNL could be Chris Carter after the Nats get him from us.

Unless Carter becomes the PTBNL; but you're right: As of now, and until and unless there's a trade between the Diamondbacks and the Nats, and Mr. Carter goes to Washington, we're not a part of it.

Sounds like deal is done and we were part of it. I wonder who we got back in return? Both Wily Mo and Carter are decent players, so you would imagine that the third player is also quite talented:
http://www.azcentral.com/sports/diamondbacks/articles/0818dbnb0819.html
Deal coming?
Though it might not be announced until the off-season, the Diamondbacks are involved in the trade that sent outfielder Wily Mo Peņa from Boston to Washington for a player to be named Friday.
Triple-A first baseman Chris Carter apparently will be sent to Washington, who then will ship Carter to Boston to complete the deal.
The Diamondbacks have been trying to move Carter, whose name surfaced in a report in the Boston Globe, to an American League team, where his bat could be useful with the designated hitter. Not only is Carter, who is hitting .327 with 39 doubles and 18 home runs, below average defensively, the Diamondbacks have a surplus of corner infielders.
It's not clear what player the Diamondbacks are getting in return. |

Basically this means the Dbacks are getting someone off the Nats 40 man roster. Since Carter is not on the 40 man roster, he can be traded right now. However, the Nats cannot send a player on their 40 man roster during the season unless he clears waivers, so they have to wait until the offseason to announce the trade. If the player the Dbacks were getting someone who's not on the Nats 40 man roster, the deal could be announced now.

Also, I'm wondering if this 3-way has anything to do with that Cordero-Gonzales deal we were hearing about on deadline day?
So in the end it would look something like
ARI gets: Chad Cordero
WAS gets: Wily Mo Pena, Carlos Gonzales
BOS gets: Chris Carter
Just a thought since I remember hearing about that rumor around the deadline.
|
Post from mlbtraderumors.com of the rumored 3-way before the trade deadline. This might make some sense as Cordero won his 4.15M arbitration case last year and might be too expensive for the Nationals next year (not like we're rolling with cash).

My question is , why would the Nationals want Willie Mo Pena?
He must have pictures of Bowden being a bad boy! |

Well if a certain CEO steps in randomly to do the GM's job, it's hard to gauge strategy patterns.

Willie Mo will thrive in the National League. They throw less breaking balls in the NL and he will get a chance to play everyday. If Pena could hit a curve he would be making 15 Million a year.
Good move for the Nats.
Big right hand power bats are hard to find.

Tell that to the Reds, who also got tired of waiting for him to "blossom."

Pena is a toolsy outfielder, something Bowden has a fetish for.
