Ah, the unsubstantiated rumor!

No, but seriously, can you provide a link to such speculation? From whence doth it come?

Ah, Levski comes around to my way of thinking. Byrnes would look very appealing to other clubs and he'll never look this good again.

He is after all the just the 2nd D-Back ever to reach the 20-20 Club...

Nick Piecoro in this morning's edition wrote:
Anytime Eric Byrnes does anything worthy of merit for the Diamondbacks, he can't help but think back to the second half of last season, when he struggled so badly he was cast off into the open waters of free agency.

After becoming on Monday only the second player in Diamondbacks history to hit 20 home runs and steal 20 bases in the same season, Byrnes again put his season in context.

"It's a pretty cool accomplishment," Byrnes said after swiping his 20th base and hitting his 21st home run, both career highs. "Especially considering this past off-season I was a little worried about finding a job."

Byrnes hit just .191 last season after the All-Star break, and was non-tendered by the Baltimore Orioles.

"I try to pride myself on having the combination of power and speed," he said.

The only other 20-20 player in franchise history was Devon White in 1998 (22 of each).

Much easier to get something of valued for this 20-20 guy than for an OF in the 300-500 club. That would possibly resolve the LF position to go with Hairston-Davanon. One of the trio was destined for trade bait.

Well...he tailed off somewhat in the second half this year, but not nearly as bad as in previous years. His OBP went in the crapper, but at least his slugging % stayed up pretty high thanks to homers and doubles.

.292/.352/.522 .874 OPS PRE ASB
.259/.299/.476 .775 OPS POST ASB

.278/.331/.501 .831 OPS Season YTD

I think it was Stu that pointed out that the loss of Davanon removed a "natural" platoon partner for Byrnes....so since August 5th, Byrnes has played almost every day, and against most righties, so that and the combination of wearing down due to his "hustle" certainly hurt his rate stats.

Interesting side note on Byrnes splits:

Home .262/.310/.502 .812 OPS
Away ..293/.350/.504 .854 OPS

So his season is certainly not a Chase Field illusion. Does anyone have any theories as to why this would be? What about our ballpark might not work in Byrnes favor? Or is it most likely just sample size and strength of competition fluctuation?

As far as selling high on him, I guess that depends on what you can get for him.

There is a pretty big leap here from idle speculation by this writer, where he states his OPINION on what the rockies SHOULD do,

Quote:
OK, fine. Then ownership has to be willing to part with a top minor leaguer to go after Coco Crisp or Eric Byrnes. Or they have to aggressively pursue Dave Roberts, which they plan to do, as a short-term fix if he hits the open market.

And then compared to your statement:

Quote:
Rumor has it Colorado may spend some top prospects to get Eric Byrnes.[/

These two things do not equate.

Eric Byrnes WAS a rockie, last year, for all of 14 games, and they traded him to the Orioles. I would be very surprised if the Rockies were to give anything of substance to the D backs to get Byrnes back again.

So, somebody in Denver thinks Eric Byrnes would be a good acquisition, eh?
Who they got we might want in exchange, then?

I also note one theme in the article that could equally be said of the '06 Diamondbacks:

Quote:
Even with reinforcements, the truth is they need more from their best players. Matt Holliday has to become a force late in games. Brad Hawpe must hit left-handers or fall into a platoon with Jeff Baker. Todd Helton, at the very least, must reach 65 extra-base hits next year, becoming a Brian Giles-type with 20 home runs and 100 RBIs.

Just change the names...

MLB teams don't spread rumors, writers spread rumors...

So when someone writes something, it becomes rumor.

I was just posting what I found, so I apologize if it wasn't "rumory" enough for you

I've been for getting rid of BoMel since the middle of last season. Nice guy, but I want somebody that knows how to win and get the most out of his players. BoMel does not fit that description at all. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I would love to see Bobby V as the Dback manager. If not him then I wouldn't mind giving Hale a chance.

The Rockies already had Eric Byrnes once...

We'll send him over again. I can live with Jeff Francis in Sedona red...

Gotta figure Hale would work well with the younger players. Also, the Red Sox hired a major player for the 1980 Arizona Wildcat national champs and it turned out ok, so maybe hiring a guy that was big on the '86 UA championship team will work for us.

Anybody notice that the U of A had a higher attendance for their home opener than ASU?
