Pete Kerzel / MLB.com wrote:
The Arizona Diamondbacks hired Tom Allison as their new scouting director on Saturday and signed Bob Gebhard to a two-year extension as vice president and special assistant to general manager Josh Byrnes.

Allison, a West Coast and Midwest scouting supervisor with the Milwaukee Brewers, replaces Mike Rizzo, who left the Diamondbacks for a position with the Washington Nationals. Allison also has experience in scouting and player development with the New York Mets.

Allison joined the Mets' scouting department after five years as a Minor League player and was part of the Double-A Binghamton Mets Eastern League championship squad as a player/coach in 1994. He was promoted from administrative assistant to assistant scouting director in November 1995 and worked as area scouting supervisor for the Mets from 1997-99.

"He's efficient in all areas," Byrnes said of Allison between games of Saturday's doubleheader against Washington at RFK Stadium. "He's a good evaluator, he seems to have experience and knows how to run a good department. He has the background and skills to be proficient in all those areas."

One of nine candidates interviewed for the opening, Allison's stock rose after Byrnes spoke with Jack Zduriencik, the Brewers' director of amateur scouting, who hired Allison when he moved from the Mets to Milwaukee.

"Tom had excellent people give him very strong recommendations, certainly [enough] to include him in the process," Byrnes said. "The more we checked, and the interview itself, made it apparent he was the right guy."

Gebhard joined the Diamondbacks before the 2005 season after five years as vice president and assistant general manager with the St. Louis Cardinals. He was general manager of the Colorado Rockies from 1991-99.

I wonder if Gebhard's finally going to move to Arizona?

The Brewers’ front office webpage lists Tom Allison as a “West Coast Crosschecker.” Not much else to be found on Tom.

David B, what have you heard about Tom Allison?

He sounds like a great pick up for the organization. You can never have too many good talent evaluators and he sounds like one.

I know this was probably just a mistake in wording, but I thought it curious of Byrnes to say, "he seems to have experience...". Shouldn't you know that before you hire someone for such an important position?

Allison, 38, spent the previous seven years as the West Coast and Midwest scouting supervisor for the Milwaukee Brewers. Prior to that, Allison spent five years in the New York Mets scouting department.

Byrnes did not know Allison before the interview process began, but Allison was recommended to him by “people who have been running successful scouting departments,” Byrnes said.

Nick yesterday wrote:
Tom Allison was raised in Alaska, attended college in California, spent a few years scouting for the New York Mets in the southwest and seven more years with the Milwaukee Brewers living in Austin, Texas.

"I've been a baseball gypsy," he said.

But he had never met Josh Byrnes before interviewing for the Diamondbacks' scouting director's position. Now the two will be working side by side as Allison was named the club's new director of scouting Saturday.

Allison, 38, was one of nine candidates interviewed and replaces Mike Rizzo, who in July accepted a position as assistant general manager of the Washington Nationals.

"It was a very difficult decision," Byrnes said. "But we feel we found the right guy to keep this department moving in the right direction, as it has been for a long time."

Allison made it far as Triple-A for the Mets before retiring as a player and taking a job as an assistant in New York's scouting department in 1994.

The past seven years Allison was one of two national cross-checkers for Milwaukee, helping the Brewers replenish their farm system with players such as Rickie Weeks, J.J. Hardy and Prince Fielder.

"He'll be absolutely terrific," Brewers scouting director Jack Zduriencik said. "I thought it was only a matter of time before somebody gave him an opportunity. Josh has a good one there."

Allison said his first order of business will be to touch base with everyone in the Diamondbacks scouting department.

"They have a staff in place that should be thoroughly commended on the job they've done," Allison said.

TAP, do you mind linking Nick's articles? I can never find them on the stupid AZ central site.

Gambo's shit, however, is always front and central...

BTW gang,

Who was it that hired Rizzo?

Maybe part of our minor league success can be attributed to that person?

I'll post his stuff as I stumble across it. Maybe Nick can let us know how to find his articles more consistently online.

I was being harsh to Joe Jr. He was pretty good getting the players that Showalter wanted. Thankfully Showalter knew what he wanted. Once Colangelo started calling the shots, the shit hit the fan. Many times.
