I-17 is already close enough to do that -- just need to have an elevated portion through downtown -- oh, and leave the roof open...

I'm not sure how much light rail will help in the East Valley because the route is miles from most residential areas and I think parking will be limited. It would be nice if Valley Metro ran their buses from the park and ride locations to and from the ball park. I would love to be able to take a bus from 40th Street and Pecos for $1.25-1.50 (.60 for kids). That park & ride lot even has covered parking. |

EB has exceeded my expectations of him this year and I hope he gets 4/40 from some other team as his reward. |

Bickley was really irresponsible with that column. He knows as well as anybody what financial limitations the Diamondbacks have, the amount of OF prospects moving up the system, and he sure oughtta be able to look at EB's splits.
What a douchebag.

Being irresponsible with his columns is a frequent thing with him. Remember the ridiculous columns about the pictures in the hallway......that he was wrong about anyway?

Light rail's limitations have more to do with the geographic layout of the City than anything. It would be prohibitively expensive to build enough rail and spurs to really make an impact on downtown events. The rail line going in will have little, if any, impact on attendance, since it doesn't go near very many population centers, and the ones it passes have no disposable income (save the downtown dwellers in Roosevelt or Willo). If you live downtown as I do, it will be great. For everybody else, probably not so much.

The thing with light rail is that it takes a number of years to build a network of lines. In Portland, we started in the late 70s, and 30 years later we only have three completed routes, and one more that's in the process of being completed.
Still, a system of lines has to start somewhere.

Light rail is within a 1/4 mile of 100's of thousands of residents, believe it or not. Figure 60k+ at ASU, and the increased residential up the Central Ave Corridor, plus the northern spur, it makes getting to the ballpark immensely more convenient to a lot of people.
Just speaking from experience, I think a lot of students will hop on the train to the ballpark, and back. Literally, 3-5k per game. The demographics support that, at least while school is in session, which is only about 1/2 the season. Still, that comes out to an additional 120-200k per year, an additional 5-8% overall increase. And it will bring a much different ethnic element to the ballpark. It'll be great to show that Phoenix is more than a bi-cultural city.
Also important to note is that maybe a bigger bonus than the light rail opening will be the end of light rail construction, something that I find to be an extreme deterrent to downtown travel. If all the other businesses have temporarily suffered, stands to reason the baseball club is in the same boat, barring extreme circumstances, like the Suns being a top-3, exciting NBA team for the last 3 years.
Given all the forces coming together for the '09 season - young players coming into their own, an increased payroll, a post-Nash transition period for the Suns, light rail and downtown revitalization, economic upturns, etc. - the Diamondbacks shouldn't be wasting their money building a wall and limiting seats. Attendance will be damn near 40k/game.

Glad to see us here in Charlotte are not the only ones dealing with light rail construction. My office is right beside the new line and I've been dealing with it for 2+ years now. I can empathize with you. Our line is "supposed" to be completed in November (already been pushed back several times and still behind schedule). What is your expected completion date?

Sutton and Williams are really talking up EB on today's broadcast.
If he keeps it up performance-wise after the ASB, that kind of media focus isn't going to make it any easier when the contract runs out and EB signs somewhere else... |
