Bank on it. If in the next week or so the Diamondbacks don't turn it around and start gaining ground instead of getting buried into it, they will informally call the whole thing off and start planning for 2007 by playing their next wave of prospects.
Can they stop that from happening?
"We have to. There's no ifs, ands or buts about it," Luis Gonzalez said. "September has to be a big month for our club or we'll be out of this thing early."
"Patience or panic? We've just got to start winning freaking games," outfielder Eric Byrnes said, raising his voice as he finished getting dressed. "We've got to figure out a way to get it done or we start looking forward to next year."
"We've got to keep grinding," manager Bob Melvin said. "We'll mix our lineup up, change some things around if we feel like it's the best thing to do as far as our bullpen goes, and we'll do anything to try and get a little different flavor."
If none of that works - and don't think Melvin hasn't already tinkered and toyed with it all leading up to this point - then expect the flavor change to arrive straight from Triple-A Tucson, where a new batch of kiddies will get a look-see. |
"September has to be a big month for our club or we'll be out of this thing early," said Gonzo. Barring one game in October, September is the last month of the season. Out of this thing early?
We already have several of those "new batch of kiddies" up here. Just start playing them consistently. What are the chances Hairston will see any starts in LF?

If Gonzo and company can't already realize the obvious, it may be best to go on an early September losing streak--Gonzo certain to lead that charge since he ain't coming outta the lineup "while we're still in this thing."
I'm taking a red-eye to D.C. tonight, so will be at RFK to see our September team. I'm hoping to see more of our future team, but I'd be shocked if Scotty is slated for left field until mathematical elimination. |

odd, isn't it? I guess he isn't clutch, huh?
Quentin sucked in August. I hope he can get things going in September and close the year on a good note. |

And I'm sure it hasn't escaped anyone's notice that every regular player hitting over .300 for the month is a young prospect with the sole exception of Hudson. For f**k's sake, EGon is hitting .300! And the only regular doing worse than Gonzo this month is Quentin, and he's only had 86 ABs in the show.

Wow, those August numbers show that Shoe's around-the-all-star break rants about the coming Byrnes slide in the second half was eerily on the mark. It's like drove off the cliff...
How can Chad Tracy have a slugging % barely over .350 for an entire month? God, nobody on this team is showing any pop in the bat at all other than Hudson and Drew (Young is off to a promising start, but small sample and all that). |

How does a guy hit .310 for a month, mostly in the middle of the order, and only total 4 RBIs?
A perfect storm of things must happen actually:
#1. He must obviously not hit well with RISP or ROB
Jackson hit .125 w/RISP and .237 w/ROB
#2 He must not hit very many extra base hits
Jackson put up a SLG% of .393 while hitting .310 for the month. Jackson had 1 HR for the month.
#3 He must not get very many chances to knock runners in
Jackson had 94 total PAs in the month of Aug. 25 of them occured when he lead off the inning. OR put another way, 26.6% of his PA for Aug happened when he was the first batter of the inning.
Jackson's .125 AVG w/RISP is actually 2 for 16 (16 chances w/RISP) and one of his "failures" was a bases loaded GO that scored a runner.
His .237 AVG w/ROB is actually 9 for 38. With that same "failure" as mentioned above. For those keeping track, 38 PAs with a man on base, 16 PAs with him past 1B, and 25 PAs leading off the inning.
Jackson also had a SAC w/RISP which doesn't count for or against him.
In all truth, mooviegeek is right, Jackson did primarily hit in front of Gonzalez when he accumulated those 25 PAs to lead off, but really, Estrada helped out a little bit as well.
So while Jackson definately deserves some of the blame when Thom points out those 4 RBIs from the "heart of the order hitting" Jackson. He doesn't deserve it all.
