Could we create a spot on the board somewhere, maybe a hyperlink, which has a listing of some of the stats we commonly refer to in the discussions. Things like FIPs, WHips etc.
Just so we beginners have a quick point of reference when we're ready the points of some of the more advanced users.
If we took a portion of the home page and listed the 4 or so main stats with a quick definition that would be really helpful to at least me. |

There could be locked threads in the forum that define and explain certain stats.

A sticky would work better. Just a simple locked thread gets pushed to oblivion. TAP or Jim would have to set it up. |

I was thinking of a whole area or section labeled stats with each stat having a locked thread. No other posts would go there so they wouldn't ever be pushed.

Per your request, there is now a sticky in the Major League Baseball section. Please feel free to add any useful stats or links that have been missed. |

That's awesome thanks.
One more request, however, is if someone could post on that sticky what is considered a good number for a few of those stats.
I've seem statements of "he has a whip of 1.25" and have no idea as to whether that's good or what a good range is and whether a better number is higher or lower.
Sorry for being such a pain. |

WHIP is walks and hits allowed per inning pitched and a lower number is definitely better. A 1.25 WHIP would mean that this pitcher gives up on average 1.25 walks and/or hits for every inning pitched.
Others may be able to give a general rule of thumb on what ranges for each stat would be good, bad, or ugly, but I'd suggest taking a look at the espn.com stats page to see how the players in the league rank within each statistical measurement. This will show you where ranges of numbers fall within those rankings for each stat.

I second TAP's suggestion: explore stats sites. See how seasons stack up against one another. See what kind of adjusted numbers lead the leagues. |

I have an idea. Maybe a new forum for stats in general. That way people with questions can ask them openly in a more general context. We could also put a stick there of a post with many links to stat-related sites if someone were to be so kind as to make a good list o' reading for various metrics. I'd volunteer, but I'm a n00b to statistical analysis in baseball myself.

Speaking of stats, does anyone know if a record is kept anywhere of how many times per game a teams gets its leadoff batter on base? A friend and I were discussing this the other day when the Pads got their leadoff man on every inning for the first 5 innings of the game.
Seemed to us that the opposition always gets the leadoff guy on more often than the D'backs do. No wonder we are playing from behind all the time, if that is true.
