Dugout doings
A disagreement in the dugout on Wednesday in San Francisco that was caught by cameras appeared to show a confrontation between catcher Johnny Estrada and second baseman Orlando Hudson.

The disagreement was between Estrada and pitching coach Bryan Price, both men said. Estrada called it a "heat of the battle" moment, adding that he was upset the team had blown a late lead and he said something Price didn't like.

Brennaman rumors
There have been reports in Cincinnati that Diamondbacks television announcer Thom Brennaman might be asked to join the Cincinnati Reds broadcast team to work with his father, longtime play-by-play voice Marty Brennaman.

Both Brennamans are saying there is no truth to the rumors, which began when it was revealed Reds radio announcer Steve Stewart is not having his contract renewed. Thom Brennaman, the voice of the Diamondbacks for nine seasons, is in the second year of a five-year contract extension.

Thom's making a name for himself in AZ. Why would he want to be in his dad's shadow?

Now the really scary thing.... Anyone who has listened to or watched other team's broadcasts knows that, for as much bitching as we do about Thom, there are much worse announcers out there. It could be even worse!

Oh, you go to any mid-market or lower, and the baseball crew is horrendous. Except in Boston, they are big-market, but their crew is terrible. Jeremy Remi, I think it is. Anybody I meet from Boston says the guy is half-cocked by the 4th inning and rambling. But they love him because he's terrible and they can laugh at him. It's impossible to truly bond with a crew that's overly polished. That's what I don't like about Thom: He's too polished. Or just too good for what the baseball crew is supposed to be. But then again, I was a fan of Traber because of how terrible he was.

I really just wanted Rod Allen and Jim Traber to be the team for 15 yrs. And watch Allen's animosity towards Traber for being bush-league build and build over the years, until the day Rod Allen says he's had enough of this bunk bitch and bitch slaps a fat and drunk Jimmy T and a full-out brawl erupts.

All you need do is say "White Sox announcers" and the point is made.

Was watching some of the Twins-Sox matchup... Had a choice between WGN and MLB Extra Innings (Twins announcers) feed. THAT was a no brainer!

I was raised a Dodger fan. A life growing up listening to Vin Scully has pretty much spoiled me for anybody else forever.

I was drinking tonight but talked about the olden days when I heard Dick Enberg and Don Drysdale call Angels games back in the day. Best I ever heard at radio play by play of a baseball game................

I too grew up in SoCal and think Vin Scully is the best. That was back in the day when one announcer did radio and the other did the TV side (on the rare TV dates). Vin and Jerry (Doggett) would flip flop TV/radio every 3 innings. And when I started listening to Vin Scully, Drysdale was playing for the Dodgers.

It has to be now that Scully has been over 50 years with the Dodgers. He was with them in Brooklyn.

Dick Enberg too was good (Oh, my!). There was a time when Joe Torre couldn't get a MLB job and did the Angels for a few years.

Sorry I got a little sidetracked with the announcer thing but those guys were great. And Thom is a geek.

Vin is definitive. Can't argue that--even non-Dodger fans appreciate his craft.

Announcer preference is so individual.... based on "intangibles" that either have people nodding in agreement or bashing the poster for his unbelievable taste.

I grew up on Harry Carey's enthusiasm during his prime in the late 50's through the 60's. Even if we tuned in the radio a little late, we could absolutely tell by the tone of his voice whether the Cardinals were winning or not... and there was no better promoter of the game (or of beer) through all his banter that included personal stories, descriptions of gorgeous babes in the bleachers, and criticisms of boneheaded plays without ever missing a play by play call.

I credit Harry a great deal for infecting me with absolute love for baseball. (and he certainly infused much of that love into both the St. Louis and Chicago markets).

Can't beat fun at the ol' ballpark!!!

Brennaman would be fine if he'd just shut up more and give up his long-winded trivia crap.

Grace would be fine if he'd get the hell out of the booth entirely!

Just because TV people in other places are bad doesn't mean we should be satisfied with the two goofballs WE have. IMO, if Brennaman goes, Schulte should be the primary and Candiotti the color guy, at least at the start.

As for Melvin....looks like Joe Girardi in Fla will probably get the axe after the season. I don't know much about his managing style but he seems to have gotten about as much out of the Marlins this year as anyone could have done. It is high time the D'backs changed their perspective on managers as they've done on GMs: disregard the PVs like Melvin, and go for more innovative thinkers.

I can't see Melvin leaving this offseason, especially in the middle of his contract.

He hasn't been all bad

Through August 27th

23 game improvement from 2004

4 game improvement from 2005

I'm not saying this is dramatic, but I just don't know if a managerial change is the best thing for morale.

Maybe a new hitting coach is in order.

This is Scully's 58th season with the Dodgers. He started in 1948.

Growing up in Detroit listening to Ernie Harwell spoiled me. Class all the way. Nobody today comes close to Harwell and Scully.

Grew up in Tucson and listened to damn near every Dodgers game from '87-'97. Vin Scully is the greatest announcer in the history of baseball, hands down. Not too polished, just professional. And he didn't have the disc jockey voice, but just a real smooth, typical voice.

Remember the first time I went to Dodger Stadium and you could hear Vin Scully over the radio throughout the whole park. Effin cool.

As for us, I really like Schulte. Much more than Brennamen. Schulte and the other dude are who the staff should be, but you know Jerry C and his "world-class everything" motto when starting this franchise. Course, now there's some cost restraint, and a decent place to save a little $ might be changing broadcast teams. Schulte looks and sounds more like an Arizonan than Thom B to me.

Let Thom B go back to network events.

Brennaman does OK when he's working alone (or almost alone, as when he's paired with Matt Williams); but he's hard to take with Mark Grace, especially as he starts feeding into whatever bit of inanity Grace is playing with at any given moment.

Among other things, that's one of the things I like about Schulte - he tolerates Grace without egging him on. I like the team of Schulte and Candiotti on radio; and wouldn't mind at all if they were to become the booth team on the TV side.

I guess I do like Schulte more than I think. The comparison of Grace with Thom vs. Schulte reminds me of Traber. When Traber was paired with Thom, he'd go wild and make an ass of himself but Schulte always kept him on a short leash.

The other thing I like about him vs. Thom is that he doesn't get preachy about meaningless stats like BA w/ RISP and he doesn't take Ethier's baseball card into the bathroom with him.

The dream team is Schulte with Rod Allen and Jim Traber. Let Grace go put a uniform on and be a bench/hitting coach, and let Thom B go do college football full-time.

Not if you are a buffet spread!

Rod Allen was a likeable guy, I just thought he was a little boring. I couldn't stand Traber.

Traber was the kind of baseball announcer I liked not being able to stand. And you're not supposed to be able to stand your baseball crew. They are meant to be despised and laughed at.

I didn't mind Traber because I didn't expect much in the way of technical information from him. Kind of like the way I liked Dizzy Dean. Goofy and a little off the mark but absent the juvenile style of Grace.
