YAY!!! FINALLY!!! Wish it could have gotten done a couple weeks ago, but I'll take it. It's like Christmas in August. Thanks Josh Byrnes!!! Now work on getting some pitching for next year and we'll be fine. |

Didn't hear about this until I got to the ballgame tonight and BOND delivered me the news. I quite literally asked him, "Are you fucking with me right now?" before allowing myself to celebrate.
Way to go Byrnes, and I echo everyone else in wishing Greenie luck in the Big Apple!

About 6.3M... roughly half of what was going to be owed to him (10M + 2M buyout) |

An interesting quote:
Quote: |
For Arizona, dealing Green allows general manager Josh Byrnes more flexibility as he plans the 2007 roster.
"We got some financial relief in this deal that will help us with spending power in 2007," Byrnes said. "This one has been lingering for a while. Everyone has been able to conceptualize him going to the Mets. ... We create more playing opportunities for our young guys who we believe in." |

Think the Mets board "may" be a bit more heavily monitored (given the larger number of fan postings), so he'll likely be banned numerous times under various pseudonyms |

What do you guys think about the amount of $ we kicked in? I would have been really happy at $5mil, thought it was fair at $6mil, but thought we were getting bent over if we picked up anything more than half.

This is literally glass half full or glass half empty.
You can look at it like they had to "eat" 6.3 million, or you can look at it like they SAVED 6.5 million.
This is what it took to get it done.....they certainly did not get "bent over" on this trade....(although they got bent over the they traded FOR him...LOL)
Paying the mets 5+ million , or 6+ million...not much difference at this point. The net result is Q's spot is freed up, and they have 6+ million more for the 2007 war chest to go get some pitching.
The rest is nit picking...... |

Completely right about the half full/empty. You figure they traded Green for Livan next year, and it's not so bad. I was just hoping we'd cap the cash at $6mil. But what's another $300K to make it happen. Oh well.
As much as we need pitching, it might be better to attempt to put together a cheap temporary staff for next year, and then hope that our system can start to produce some more arms from the heavy pitching drafts the last two years.

Right now we are in a position that any GM should pray for, but fear. We have a good stock of tradeable talent that we can afford to move <Byrnes, Estrada, Hairston et al> and we should have somewhere between 14-20MM in budget money to get two arms for next year, and possibly upgrade the BP.
I believe we have the #1, #3 & #5 spots spoken for with Webb, Hernandez & Cruz/Gonzalez/Nippert so we only need a #2/#4. We can actually afford a Schmidt/Batista deal <if we stretched a bit> IMHO but with the resources available hopefully we can find a cheaper solution <or at least less risky>. |

I think it would kind of be a waste to go out and grab a couple big FA's tis off-season if we're starting all of our own guys next year. They won't be ready, no matter how much we spend on the rotation/pen, to compete for the division. It might be better to just build up the warchest and really get after it for '08.

Green likely to bat 6th in NY, says lack of HR's this year was intentional.
The Journal News of NY today wrote: |
There was a time when he was younger that Shawn Green hit four homers in a game and once crushed 49 in a season.
With four 30-homer seasons, there was a time when he was a real slugger.
No more.
At 33, and after a slow start this season for the Arizona Diamondbacks, Green opted for a more controlled offensive approach rather than trying to hit home runs.
Green has flashed streaky power throughout his career, but with 11 homers this year, there obviously haven't been many spurts.
"There's nothing physically wrong," Green said about his decline in power yesterday during a conference call.
"I was really struggling earlier this year and made a conscious effort to stop chasing home runs. I shortened my swing and started hitting line drives.
"I've been swinging the bat well. My goal is to build off that, and the homers will come."
They haven't for a while.
Green hit 49 in 2001 and 42 in 2002, but his best year since was 28 two years ago. He hasn't driven in more than 100 runs since 2002.
Willie Randolph doesn't know where Green will hit in the batting order, but presumably the manager won't tinker with the top part and could bat him sixth behind David Wright. |

Strategic thinking, but they'd have to sell the fan base. To try to appease everyone, they might be better served with at least going after a strong #1/#2 who'll be around for a few years and then play it by ear with the option of going bonkers before the trade deadline if we are looking like a strong playoff team.

The fan base will accept losing if they're sold on the young players, a "new" team, etc. Plus we have Webb, who they'll be touting as a Cy Young candidate all off-season. Webb, Livan, and Miggie would be an adequate top of the rotation, and then see how Vargas, EnGon, Nippert, Owings, etc look.
I think that if we traded Estrada, Byrnes, and Hudson, we could get the prospects back that we need to make a move for a big-time pitcher without it costing us too many of our own prospects or more $$.

I think they should keep Hudson. It's a young infield that will benefit from his presence. He's got to learn to move to his right, though...
Trade away Estrada, Byrnes... consider offers on Tracy.
Release Clark, Easley.
Resign Davanon.
That's a start...

I'm with you on trading Hudson last. Estrada first. Snyder is solid and somebody is willing to give us something for a catcher that can hit like Estrada.
I think this season was a fluke for Tracy, as he was attempting to slide into a power position in the lineup. Should go back to what he did best - hit line ddrives. Seemed like he was trying to get up over that 30 HR mark.

Rumor has it that Seattle is looking to trade Beltre away, how is his defense? I know it would have to be a cherry deal as he has about 11MM/yr for the next 3 years locked up, but he is at the right age and may benefit from batting at the BOB <I know we've heard this before>.
If his defense is really good I'd be willing to trade Tracy to them with a fringe prospect or so if we could get Beltre here for around 6-7MM/yr.

I don't understand why we'd get rid of Estrada, unless of course we were bowled over by some offer. I'm all for dealing off vets, but Estrada would be the last one I'd look to move. He's relatively cheap and young and has the 12th highest catcher VORP in baseball. And just when he hits free agency hopefully Montero will be ready. But really, are we otherwise dying to get Snyder more ABs? I like him fine, but I like Estrada better.
Byrnes is the guy I'd most like to see dealt in the offseason. I have my doubts that he'll fetch more than he'd be worth to us as a #4 OF though.
As for starting pitching, I maintain that we should be making a big Oswalt push this summer. Schmidt would be a nice fallback plan.

Watching Mets feed of their game with the Cards tonight... and the Mets announcers just indicated how they are looking forward to having Shawn on the team to give David Wright needed protection.
