Maybe someone can explain to me the difference in these two plays:
Houston - Top of 6th Score
Mike Koplove pitching for Arizona HOU ARI
W Taveras singled to center. 5 4
C Biggio fouled out to first. 5 4
W Taveras stole second, W Taveras safe at third on error by shortstop S Drew. 5 4
This was Aug 4th game against HOU. You all might remember that Drew had trouble coming up with the throw from Estrada and without Hudson backing up the play, Tavaras advanced to 3B. On this play, the receiver of the throw trying to tag out the runner was charged with the error.
San Francisco - Bottom of 1st Score
Brandon Webb pitching for Arizona ARI SFO
R Winn walked. 0 0
O Vizquel singled to right, R Winn to third, R Winn scored, O Vizquel to third on throwing error by right fielder C Quentin. 0 1
This was last nights play. Tracy couldn't come up with the throw from Quentin and without Webb backing up the play, Winn scored and Vizquel was allowed 3B. On this play, the thrower trying to gun out the runner was charged with the error. |

I can't recall the Houston play and I didn't see last night's game. How did the throws compare? Was Estrada's a good one and Q's a bad one? That should really be the deciding factor. |

According to the unwritten rules of scorekeepers--always give the rookie the error when a rookie and p.v. are involved in a single play.

Well both throws were at the bag, Drew was standing in front of the bag and Tracy standing behind the bag, so the runner was inbetween the ball and Tracy, and the runner was not inbetween the ball and Drew.

99 times out of 100, the player that makes the throw is the one charged with the error.
I can only assume that Drew is "scoring" with the scorekeeper's wife/girlfriend |

I didn't see the play with Houston. But, last night....Q should not have been charged with the error on that play. The throw could have been cut-off and it was on line. Not Q's fault.

But the scorekeeper has to give an error to someone. He doesn't give it to the player who "could" have cut the throw off or to the guy at third who doesn't position himself to catch the throw, so Q unfairly comes the recipient of the official error.... Just another example to demonstrate how imprecise error figures are.

Dang, I thought this thread was going to have advice on how to pick up girls.
I didn't see the play last night, but the scorekeeper at Chase for the Houston game was right. It's just that Hudson didn't back up the play, so Drew ended up with the error. |
