We're getting sub subpar offense and sub subpar defense from our corner infield positions. On most teams, 1B and 3B are sources of power . . . for us it's a (relative) blackhole for both offense and defense

I'm not saying we should get rid of them . . . I'm just griping.

I think CoJack is doing much better defensively lately. I doubt he'll ever win a gold glove or anything, but I think he will develop into an above average defender. Remember, he started playing 1st base when he got to the big leagues.

Tracy has the physical tools to be a good hitter. Though his mind seems to be his own worst enemy. He came up with relatively little expectations, and felt comfortable flying under the radar. But when we traded Glaus and he moved back to 3rd, he felt that he had to be the one who provided "pop" in the middle of the lineup. This causes his increase in Ks, and his pull happy mentality. Habits are hard to break, but hopefully he can get it done.

Tracy will be an aveage-below aveage defender, most likely.

Both can hit about 20 HRs, or so. Thats no Ryan Howard or A-Rod, but they won't cost all that much in the long run, either. Plus, in the middle of a rally, i would rather have a double that knocks in a few runs than a home run. A HR often seems to kill a rally.

I'm thinking about last year too. I remember seeing another thread where they had all 30 first basemen's OPS stats from last year. And CoJack ranked somewhere like 25 out of 30.

I'm just annoyed at the lack of production, both offensively and defensively. Imagine how good we would be if we had Derrek Lee at first base (who we almost signed a few years ago).

Derrick Lee was out all last year with injury, and made a pile of money... sound familiar?

Didnt Jackson lead AZ in OPS last year?

Think about how good we'd be if the team would've drafted Pujols in '99 like I told them.

Jackson is going to hit. Wait until at least the first month is over before you start complaining. Tracy, I don't know. The good thing is that we have guys like Mark Reynolds, Jamie D'antona, et cetera who we can give a shot if Tracy gets worse this year. We can always sign A-Rod.

I think This is the guy you are looking for. Laughing

Seriously, it WOULD be nice if they had both gotten off to better starts. But Jackson had a decent year for a rookie, and this season is all of 11 games old. I can understand frustrtation with their lack of performance to date, but don't confuse venting a little frustration with coming to a conclusion about a guy based on so few games.

And really the constant carping on Conors defense has gotten ridiculous. He's doing fine. He's made alot of nice plays...had a few mistakes.

Looking at how some 1bmen are doing so far this year...

Conor: .621 OPS
Berkman: .609 OPS
Pujols: .606 OPS
Teixeira: .589 OPS

Dont pull any punches. We are big boys here. Just tell us how you really feel.
I like CJ and feel he is doing fine. I like his OPS so far and defense is good enough and should improve as the year goes on.
Stay the course.

Tracy is getting hotter...
Quote:
Chad Tracy, who has mentioned that he has been trying to get his swing back more to his 2005 version than the one he had last year, is starting to get hot.

The third baseman has a six-game hit streak, batting .320 with five extra base hits and seven RBIs over that stretch.

"A lot of it has to do with the approach," said Tracy. "When you catch a ball out front, you're more likely to hit homers, but I've changed my approach and my attitude about hitting homers -- and the longer I can see the ball and recognize the pitch and what it's going to do, the better."

"We've seen it all spring," said Melvin. "You see him resist pulling it and just reacting. He's going the other way and incorporating more of the whole field. It's not like he had a bad year last year, but what we're trying to get him back to is doing some of the same things that he was when he was hitting .320-.330 in the Minors."

I guess they forgot that TC himself has said that he doesn't have it in him to be the primary 1B.

Look, if Clark plays great I have no problem with him stealing 100 or so ABs from Conor. It helps the team and keeps Conor grounded that he needs to perform.

Sorry for the creative editing there Qudjy Twisted Evil

If Jackson doesn't start hitting with more authority, and Clark continues to hit homers when given more chances, then I guess we have a controversy. But not really. Clark played two in a row because of Jackie Robinson day. And it worked, and we won, so I don't care. And I am certainly not about to root against Tony Clark doing well when given a chance to play.

Jackson will start at least 130+ games , unless he doesn't hit. And you know what, if by the all star break Jackson has started 70-75 out of 90 games and is still not hitting with authority, and Clark is, I won't complain much if Clark starts getting more playing time.
