I only got to watch the last couple batter of the game. Why did Melvin put Julio to close in a non-save situation? |

You can stop now but it's going to be a long, rocky ride until the end of the season...

Ah, the excitement! More fun than a roller coaster ride at Great America

I nominate Pena for closer. He can at least throw more than one pitch for a strike.
Heck, Julio couldn't throw any of his pitches for a strike. |

In case ya didn't notice, he also threw more than one pitch for a ball.

Because a closer is a closer and it doesn't have to be in a save situation. The closer's inning is the 9th and he's usually in there if his team has a lead. I think that was the case on this date

He was already warming up in the 9th before they scored their fifth run.

Thank you, so there was a rational reason for him pitching this game. I'm still scratching my head about yesterday though.

That doesn't answer my question. A closer should not run out every 9th inning or else you risk not having him available when you really need him.

That does answer my question, thanks.

S.D. Drew gets the putout on a great throw by Snyder (at least that's what I gather from The Gub'nah's description.) |
Strong throw that came in high, but STEPHEN Drew snapped a quick tag down for the out.

...and he used his legs to block access to 2B from Cameron.

That kid sure is something special. Can you imagine if he went back into the draft and a deal wasn't made in the 11th hour. If only he were playing in May, he'd have a more legit shot at ROY. He won't qualify next year.

Then your record is blemished, Shoe. Mine remains perfect...

Yeah, but it is actually S.O. Drew.

Yeah, please don't scare me like that. I thought we'd traded for J.D.

Nah, I don't think Moorad ever represented JD...

Worst memory of SD trip was a couple years ago early... when Dbacks had game completely in control for 8.5 innings.. and then brought in then closer Matt Mantei.
OY!
I do NOT want deja vu here. |
IIRC, it was a three-run save: Mantei let the first three runners reach base before giving up an opposite-field HR to Klesko.
|
Yeah, are you thinking of 1998, when Rodriguez gave up a grand slam to Steve Finley in the 9th to blow a three-run lead for the D-backs? I think it was 8-5 D-backs that night before Finley's bomb won it for SD. That one still sticks with me for some reason.

Nah, it's not that one, but I do remember that the 2-2 pitch to Finley was a strike (lousy umpire). The walk-off GS came on the next pitch.
Here's the game in question:
PADRES 9TH: MANTEI REPLACED L. GONZALEZ (PITCHING); SADLER
REPLACED VALVERDE (PLAYING LF); Loretta singled to right; Giles
walked [Loretta to second]; Nevin singled to center [Loretta
scored, Giles to second]; ROBINSON RAN FOR NEVIN; BUCHANAN RAN
FOR ROBINSON; Klesko homered [Giles scored, Buchanan scored]; 4
R, 3 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Diamondbacks 5, Padres 6.
No GS - just the worst possible outing in a save situation on the road.

I remember that game well... Was at Petco for it. SD fans were in complete shock, but a very happy shock. I just remember leaving in silent shock (and hoping I'd never have to see another Mantei "close" situation).

Do you believe it's actually J.D. Drew? The 'D' in J.D. is from his last name when folks started calling him by his initials for, the name he went by, Jonathan Drew. That's why I went with S.D., not S.O.

actually, JD Drew's name is David Jonathan Drew. growing up, however, people flipped his first two initials, calling him JD instead of DJ. |
