Byrnes has continued discussions with Scott Boras, the agent for unsigned first-round pick Max Scherzer, but the negotiations have not picked up speed.
Should Scherzer, a right-hander out of Missouri, not sign by June 1, the Diamondbacks would receive the 63rd pick in the 2007 draft as compensation.
It's unknown how new rules - rules favorable to the clubs - could have an impact on Scherzer's decision to re-enter the draft.
This year's picks will have an Aug. 15 signing deadline, and teams that fail to sign their picks will receive near identical compensation picks the following year. |

If the organization feels good about Scherzer, they'll sign him in the end...it was the same thing with Drew. Same agent, same timeline, midnight signing and what not

Interesting comment by Nick about the unknown of how the new rule will affect Max if he reenters the draft. You have to think they won't help him.
As to dealing with Boras, “You know it likely will be a long process, it likely will go down to the wire, it likely will be intense and it is quite likely to include a little drama,” Lucchino said.
From the same article about Boras, “I[Boras] kept on telling Jason, ‘You’re special, you are a leader, you are someone who has that sense of commitment.’ This man could not catch. And he took a racquetball, a thousand a day, to improve his hands,he was so driven. I’m sitting there at the draft and I couldn’t get anybody to pay him what I knew was his value.
Have we heard any of the Dbacks young players who have had trouble with their hands doing this? |

From Jim Callis' ESPN.com chat:
Quote: |
Rick (freeport, me): any word on if Max Scherzer is close to signing?
Jim Callis: Nope. Still expect him to sign in the next couple of weeks, but not hearing anything specific and still will be puzzled at how he's going to command more than slot money. |
Jim said something similar last week, that Scherzer didn't fall in the draft because of signability and therefore shouldn't expect much more than slot. I have my doubts Boras thinks the same...

Scherzer Holdout Seems Unlikely To End Soon
The Diamondbacks are not close to signing 2006 No. 1 draft pick Max Scherzer, and it appears negotiations with the former Missouri righthander could follow a similar path to that of other high-profile draft clients of the Scott Boras Corporation.
It won't be anything new to the Diamondbacks. The organization had to go down a similar road when it signed 2004 first-rounder Stephen Drew, who signed May 31, 2005--15 minutes before he was to reenter the draft pool.
Boras, who represents Scherzer and Drew, compares Scherzer to another of his premier pitching clients, Royals righthander Luke Hochevar, and appears to be seeking a deal similar to the $5.3 million major league deal Kansas City gave Hochevar last summer as the No. 1 overall pick. Hochevar was the 40th overall pick in 2005 (by the Dodgers) but didn't sign, played in the independent Central League and re-entered the draft.
The D-Backs have made what they consider to be a "solid offer" to Scherzer, the 10th pick overall, but it is not believed to be close to Hochevar numbers.
"Before the draft last year, we told teams we considered Max one of the top two pitchers in the draft," Boras said Friday. "We certainly felt Max and Luke were on a par with one another. In our conversations (with the Diamondbacks), they assured us they had a similar opinion."
"We certainly will continue negotiating. We expect it to work," Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes said. "We are always balancing risk with reward. Even high-profile college pitchers will show more misses than hits."
Whatever the outcome, Scherzer's lengthy negotiations are probably the last of their kind. Under terms of the new collective bargaining agreement between major league players and owners, a draftee not signed by Aug. 15 will return to the draft pool.
Boras has invited Byrnes and his staff to watch Scherzer throw this spring in California, and Byrnes said he plans to accept the offer next week, "less to see him throw, more to visit with him and get to know him," Byrnes said.
Scherzer has spent time in a throwing and conditioning program similar to the one Hochevar participated in last offseason. It paid off for Hochevar, who was throwing 97 mph in his first outing with Fort Worth last May, helping push him to the top of the '06 draft heap. |

Sometime before the draft, Scherzer will sign a minor league deal with the Dbacks and get slot money. and you can take that to the bank... |

I'd bet slot money plus something. Maybe an extra 100K. Maybe a guaranteed 40 man spot the next year. Maybe a major league salary in a yera even if he is not in the majors. Maybe more if the questions as to Max's health are put to rest.
I don't know, but Boras will wrankle something out of this. The time of the signing, the closeness to the draft and the crummy draft choice the Dbacks get if he doesn't sign all can be used to justify paying more than slot.
In fact, if it just take an extra 100-200k and Max is healthy, the Dbacks would be fools not to sign him.
Lev's guess is better than mine, but this would be my feeling if I were JB. |

tinstaap...I liked Linceoum, miller, and Lincoln in order last year...Now from the talk I heard, the consensus is Miller and Linceoum are most polished. Then its everyone else. Scherzer is supposedly Nippert without the hook.

Scherzer update: The D-backs are still talking with last year's top draft pick Max Scherzer and have until June 1 to sign him or lose his rights and gain a sandwich pick.
"We'll just keep negotiating," GM Josh Byrnes said. "We have a few months left, but at the same time, here we are in Spring Training so the larger goal is getting him to the big leagues so these are valuable days for him."
Byrnes said that he and some of the front office will visit face-to-face with Scherzer at the offices of his agent Scott Boras sometime "hopefully, within the next two weeks." |

There is just something in the tone of the quotes that leads me to believe that the Dbacks are not going to budge too much from their position, and knowing Boras he will overplay his hand.

well, weaver had history of biceps tendonitis...
my point was that neither scherzer nor boras are keen on having max re-enter the draft. all this posturing is about dollars. bot the dbacks and boras know that scherzer will sign. he gains nothing from going back into the draft, especially since it's going to be very deep and talented...

True - AND entering next years draft means entering a draft with the new rules that favor teams (teams who's pick does not sign, get a very similar pick the following year) - I agree with levski.. its about getting the most money he can at this point... i dont see much chance he goes back into the draft...

Scherzer update
Quote: |
Good to see you: General manager Josh Byrnes, director of pro scouting Jerry DiPoto and farm director A.J. Hinch flew to California on Wednesday to meet with top draft pick Max Scherzer and his agent Scott Boras.
The meeting began at Boras' offices in Newport Beach and continued over dinner. Byrnes said the meeting was, "more oriented towards who we are than any hard and fast negotiation. It was a worthwhile trip."
Scherzer, who was taken with the 11th overall selection in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft, is the only first-round pick to not have signed. The two sides have until 10 p.m. MST on May 31 to reach a deal or Scherzer will go back into the draft pool and the D-backs will be awarded a sandwich pick as compensation.
While Byrnes said the two sides didn't talk specifics with regards to numbers, they did make what they felt was a compelling case about their organization.
"We're pretty proud of who we are and what we can do to help pitchers develop and become Major Leaguers," Byrnes said. "I think a lot of it is just the synergy between front office and field staff. A former Major League pitcher [DiPoto], a former Major League catcher [Hinch] work in our front office that help us track things and oversee things from that respect. I think we surround the process about as well as we can." |
