Byrnes needs to throw a temper tantrum due to all the losing and demand a trade to a contender. Competitors like him deserve a chance to win.

I doubt he wants to play for a team that would have him as a member.

Are you listening, Mike Sasson? Eric deserves much better.

Eric deserves to play for Jeff Moorad's team of winners.

It'll still be a lot less than Eric Byrnes will be getting in 2010

Exactly. And to top it off, we're talking about a HS catcher who could arguably project out to stay at his position and possibly even be more productive than Joe Mauer has been for the Twins.

Normally I would be completely against tanking games to have a higher pick, but Bryce Harper is THAT kind of talent. Upton is too, and we're starting to see the production at age 21. Imagine how productive Upton will be with a fully-matured body and an actually potent offense (something you will be able to see as soon as he hits the free agent market at age 26 and signs on with an AL East team.)

Harper is the kind of talent worth losing for.

Yeah, but try to explain that to season ticket holders when you send out their renewal notices for the 2010 season...

From the "Sad but True" department:

Unfortunately, this team doesn't need to tank to lose games. A mere call to the bullpen seems to suffice.

With 46.3% of the 2009 season now complete, the Diamondbacks are on pace to lose 97.2 games.

The 1998 Diamondbacks through 74 games were at a 25-49 record with a -89 +/-. They would go 40-48 the rest of the way with a -58 +/-. They had an 8 game losing streak including a 1-14 stretch. Their longest winning streak was 4 games. They only had 4 series wins, 2 of which were at home.

The 2009 Diamondbacks are 30-44 and are -40. longest win streak 4 games (and oddly, our longest losing streak is also at 4 games)

(+/- is a hockey stat meaning the same thing as run differential would be in baseball. Its the same thing just goals instead of runs)

Yes, this is partially random, I just didnt remmember the 1998 team being as bad as the 2009 team. I knew the records were about the same, but since I looked a little deeper, its apparent that 1998 was worse. (I was 12 in 98 what did I know). Its still kinda sad that this team that was supposed to be a contender this year is only 5 games ahead of the expansion Diamondbacks.
