Players said the meeting was uneasy, although reliever Will Ohman did lighten the mood.

"For a guy going into his second trimester, he looks great," he told the South FloridaSun-Sentinel. "He's barely showing."

The day Manny Ramírez was suspended, Bob Melvin managed the Diamondbacks for the last time before being fired. These events are connected by more than the calendar: They prove that one player's use of a banned substance impacts many others. How different would baseball be if Manny, who hit .512 vs. Arizona last season, hadn't strayed? Hmmm

The Dodgers never make the deadline trade for Manny because, at age 35, the Red Sox slugger's skills are clearly fading. LA, lacking punch, watches as late-season pickup Adam Dunn leads the D-backs to a second straight division title. Melvin gets a two-year extension.

But do the Diamondbacks make the trade for Dunn if the Dodgers do not acquire Ramirez? I think not.

And even if a Manny-less Dodger team is playing only a few dots above .500 baseball early in the 2009 season, does the Diamondback collapse still result in the firing of BoMel, despite Olney's two-year extension?

No real point in playing what-if...

Bud Selig says, "Im awesome, Im awesome, Im awesome..."

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) – Major League Baseball chief Bud Selig had a positive spin on the Manny Ramirez suspension, saying on Thursday that it illustrated the sport's progress in its doping policy.

Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Ramirez was suspended for 50 games earlier this month after testing positive for a banned substance.

"My take is, we have a drug testing program and it worked. No one is above the law," Selig told reporters at a news conference following this week's owners meetings in New York.

"We've administered way over a thousand tests this year. We have one positive. It's working.

"What the Manny Ramirez situation proved and no one can miss -- we have a tough program that is working.

MLB to Dodgers: Manny's visit a no-no

LOS ANGELES (AP) - There will be no more visits by Manny Ramirez to the Los Angeles Dodgers' clubhouse during media access periods for the remainder of his 50-game suspension.

Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said Wednesday the club received a "friendly reminder" on Wednesday from Pat Courtney, the No. 2 spokesman in the commissioner's office, that Ramirez wasn't allowed in the clubhouse when it is open to reporters.

Gotta love Deadspin. Laughing

Manny Ramirez is eligible to re-join the Dodgers on July 3, but because being suspended 50-games for PED use is exactly like pulling a hamstring, Manny will go on a minor league "rehab" assignment first. The Dodgers indicated that his first game could be for the Inland Empire 66ers next Thursday.

ESPN.com tonight wrote:
The suspended Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder tentatively is expected to join the Dodgers' Triple-A team in Albuquerque, N.M., for a four-game series starting Tuesday, the Times reported, citing baseball sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Ramirez then will go to Class A Inland Empire for a three-game series starting June 27. Following that stint, he'll work out in Los Angeles on July 1, travel with the Dodgers to San Diego on July 2 and rejoin the lineup on July 3 against the Padres, according to the report.

Just so I understand this correctly...

When a minor league player is popped for PEDs, he's suspended and cannot play minor league baseball.

When a major league player is popped for PEDs, it's perfectly acceptable for him to play minor league baseball.

Does anyone other than myself see inconsistent application of punishment here? Following this logic, it should be okay for a minor league player that got caught cheating with PEDs to take a promotion to the major leagues and play during his suspension, as long as he doesn't play in the minor leagues.

Way to go, Bud.

"People love me everywhere I go."
- Manny Ramirez, before playing last night for the Dodgers Triple-A affiliate Albuquerque Isotopes in a "rehab assignment" from his positive performance enhancing drug test during a "50-game suspension" that does not expire until July 3. Bud, you're a joke, your drug policy is a joke, and Mannywood is a joke.

Leave it up to a lawyer like Craig over at Shysterball to compare Manny's minor league rehab assignment to a prison early release program. Albuquerque is Manny's halfway house. Laughing

Amy K. Nelson and T.J. Quinn / ESPN.com today wrote:
As Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez nears the end of his 50-game suspension, Drug Enforcement Administration investigators are looking at a Miami doctor and his son as the source of his banned performance-enhancing drug, sources familiar with the investigation told ESPN.

Major League Baseball officials, when contacted, confirmed the existence of the federal investigation.

"We're aware of the investigation and our department of investigations is cooperating with the DEA," MLB president Bob DuPuy said Thursday afternoon. He declined to answer any other questions.

Investigators believe the prescription for human chorionic gonadotropin, known as hCG, was written by Pedro Publio Bosch, 71, a physician who has practiced family medicine in Florida since 1976. His son, Anthony Bosch, 45, is believed to have worked as a contact between his father and Ramirez. It's unclear how far along the DEA is in its inquiry but sources indicated that investigators want to know whether either man ever procured improper or illegal prescriptions for other people. DEA officials could not immediately be reached for comment.

Anthony Bosch is well known in Latin American baseball circles, sources say. His relationships with players date at least from the earlier part of the decade, when he was seen attending parties with players and known to procure tickets to big league ballparks, especially in Boston and New York.
