Since the lefty Francis is starting this is what I would do, but I know it's not what Bo Mel would do:

Drew
Byrnes
Jackson
Quentin
Young
Tracy
Snyder
Hudson

Thanks for the positive wishes shoe but it's not my baby...

It was my tongue in cheek attempt to communicate that I felt that claiming a game day thread this early was premature.

Congrats on making history, foulpole, although Arnold really paved the way for you in Junior.

How desperate are we for the '07 season to start?

This thread will have, like, over a thousand entries by the time spring training gets going...

I don't think there is anyone on the planet who could project our 5th starter right now.

so if we acquire RJ, then in 07 we only really get to evaluate edgar? nippert's out of options after next year, no? so he'd better get traded for RJ, otherwise he's really sink or swim come 2008.

hey, who sings that song that goes:

in the year
twenty-five, twenty-five
if man is still alive
blah blah blah blah blah

???

Steve Gilbert had this for a projected lineup on the MLB site

Projected batting order
1. 2B Orlando Hudson:
.287 BA, 15 HR, 67 RBI
2. SS Stephen Drew:
.316 BA, 5 HR, 23 RBI
3. 3B Chad Tracy:
.281 BA, 20 HR, 80 RBI
4. LF Eric Byrnes:
.267 BA, 26 HR, 79 RBI
5. 1B Conor Jackson:
.291 BA, 15 HR, 79 RBI
6. RF Carlos Quentin:
.253 BA, 9 HR, 32 RBI
7. CF Chris Young:
.243 BA, 2 HR, 10 RBI
8. C Chris Snyder:
.277 BA, 6 HR, 32 RBI

Steve doesn't usually pull stuff out of his ass.....I'm sure he talked with Melvin to get an idea what he was thinking before writing this. And of course Melvin will change his mind and his lineups numerous times.

My only comment is that there is plenty of data and a large enough sample size to know that Tracy should be dropped way down the order against lefties, and Byrnes should be dropped way down the order against righties.

For the record:

Tracy vs lefties

413 PA, .228/.282/.349 .631 OPS

Yeah.....he might get better against lefties, he's still young, and 413 PA over 3 seasons is not a tremendous sample size, but it's big enough to know there is a serious platoon split there, and until Chad starts to hit lefties better, it is a disservice to the team to bat him any higher than 6th against lefties.

Byrnes vs. Righties:

1551 PA .242/.304/.410 .714 OPS

Well, in this case, the sample size is plenty large enough to make the deterimination. Eric Byrnes does not belong any higher than 6th or 7th in the order against right handed pitching. This is not a cleanup hitter.

And for the record, he wasn't any better against righties last year, in his career year, either

431 PA .247/..287/.441 .728

Nope...still not a cleanup hitter, (and not a #2 hitter with that .287 OBP either)

Melvin needs to LEAD, and define the players roles clearly, and in the case of Byrnes and Tracy, until they are able to overcome their extreme platoon splits, they need to know that their roles are top play good defense and do the best they can to get on base when they don't have the platoon advantage.

Given the selection of Eric Byrnes as the clean-up hitter, is it too early to start one of these?

In a perverse way, I think we all better hope that Melvin never gets fired before his contract runs out.

Think about it. The only way he is going to get the Axe before his contract runs out is if the team woefully underperforms expectations and none of the young players progress like we expect them to.

If they go 65-97 this year or something like that, he might be fired.....but who wants that? And anyway, it's not likely.

OTOH, if the team meets expecations over the next two years, and at least finishes above .500 this year, and makes the playoffs by 2008 at the latest, then of course he is going to keep his job.

Get used to it folks....Melvin is ours AT LEAST till the end of his contract, unless disaster strikes.

This of course could get him fired, but in all honesty I hope he stays, not because of his managing but like Shoe said that means we are at least performing to expectations and no disaster has hit.

Talk about having to give up the farm... Scary to imagine who else we'd have to throw in to make a deal such as this... Very Happy
