if you could trade for one #1 or #2 starter in all of baseball
1) who would it be
2) who would we give up to get them
try and think of a realistic trade that would benefit both teams and could actually happen.
i say we send eric byrnes, edgar gonzalez, dustin nippert and casey daigle to the cubs for carlos zambrano. |

What immediate needs would these four fill for Chicago that would convince them to drop Zambrano? I don't see it.

How about Owings, Nippert, Young, and Tracy for Johan Santana...if the deal includes a four year extension because Santana's contract is up at the end of the year
Santana, Webb, Johnson, Hernandez, Davis....lol

Several mediocre players don't equal one great player. The easiest way, IMHO, to think of a fair trade is to come up with one that you invision the other team selling to their fans without being run out of town.
If the Cubs had decided not to try to resign Zambrano <for some insane reason> you might be able to get the deal done by swapping out Young for Byrnes.
As for your original question, I'd be talking with Oakland about Haren. He's a solid #2 with several years of cheap control.

My thinking about evaluating likely trades is a lot like tmar's. I try to envision them in reserve (ie, my team already has Zambrano and someone offers me Byrnes, Nippert, et al for him).
No way in hell I give up Z for that package of players. |
