Yawn...

(not for you, coop -- for the news) Smile

As much as I don't think it will happen...
As much as I want it to happen...

I s'pose, with this deal, he can still be traded at the deadline...
Confused

But, hey, on the bright side it IS only a one-year deal, and JB even said that EB probably won't be back next year:

Quote:
But the Diamondbacks weren't interested in signing him to a long-term deal, their GM said, "primarily because I think our outfield numbers and young talent and prospect talent seems to be an area of strength."

In other words, Byrnes could be replaced by a youngster from Arizona's talent-laden minor-league system after this season.

He said he would like to stay in Arizona beyond this year but knows that might not be in the Diamondbacks' plans.

And Byrnes will be motivated to have a great year so he will command more money once he becomes a free agent. That doesn't mean he will have a great year, but I don't expect him to be slacking any. Laughing

Nick Piecoro this morning wrote:
The Diamondbacks took care of their last remaining arbitration-eligible player on Tuesday by agreeing with Eric Byrnes on a one-year deal, but it continues to look as if the hard-nosed outfielder will be testing the free-agent market after this season.

Byrnes and the Diamondbacks came to terms on $4.575 million deal, but the two sides had limited discussions on a multiyear contract. Though he didn't rule it out, General Manager Josh Byrnes said he didn't expect discussions to pick back up during the season.

The Diamondbacks have right fielder Carlos Quentin and center fielder Chris Young expected to play every day this season and a slew of other young outfielders - Scott Hairston, Carlos Gonzalez and Justin Upton, to name a few - either ready for the majors or climbing the organizational ladder.

With Byrnes having enjoyed a career year in 2006 as a center fielder, hitting .267 with 26 home runs and 25 stolen bases, it appears he was seeking more of a commitment than the Diamondbacks were willing to make.

"Eric understands the reasoning for them not committing '08 and '09 dollars and utilizing the money more toward pitching," agent Michael Sasson said. "But if he builds on last year's season and keeps that career arc going upward, hopefully it puts them in a position not to want to let him go."

Prior to the settlement, Byrnes, who will play left field this season, had been seeking $5 million, with Arizona offering $4.25 million.

Two questions: Does the fact that Brynes only signed a one-year contract, and Upton probably wont be in the majors by the time it expires, bode well for Hairston staying around another season?

And, does anyone know, can Hairston split time with Tucson too or is he out of options now?

From MLB Team Site

SOme interesting and positive comments here:

Quote:
"I'm happiest for my agent and for the D-backs because I know it's been a headache for both of them," Byrnes said. "The D-backs have shown a lot of patience during this process."

Eric Byrnes will be a free agent for the first time in his career after the season.

"Our door will be open," Sasson said. "If the D-backs want to talk during the year, we'll certainly listen. Eric loves Arizona and would like to be there."

The D-backs, though, seem content to let the year play out and then decide.

"Never say never," Josh Byrnes said. "I think we're probably going to use the year to sort of help us clarify who the best guys are. There's no reason to shut the door. Sometimes, you get to the point where there are enough scenarios to consider that flexibility and waiting are the best course of action, and that's the case here."

I like Eric's comments here, shows some thougtfulness and consideration for the teams position. He is showing a good attitude. Bodes well for him and the team. Since I ripped him so hard for his comments about the Giants being favorites, I owe him props for handling the contract stuff well.

And I like what Josh has to say here too. It's one thing to have plan, but clearly he needs to keep all options open, as sooner or later he is going to have to move an outfielder or two, and he really needs to let things play out a bit more before deciding.

Imagine what might have happened if a certain former left fielder had taken the same approach, givng some consideration to the team's position... Shocked

Byrnes has never stuck me as being the "slacker" type -- even though I question the reality of most of the tumbling throws he makes from the outfield. The primary reason I think the team would be better off trading him is that I'd like to see Hairston get a genuine shot at the LF position - as the result, I think, would be better production offensively for fewer dollars.

There's always the trading deadline...
