Right fielder Carlos Quentin, center fielder Chris Young and left fielder Eric Byrnes will serve as the everyday starters, while Jeff DaVanon and, perhaps, Scott Hairston will work in backup capacities. |
Right there with ya, tmar! I think the silence about Hairston is ominous; and a bad move overall for the team.

This Hairston situation is kinda confusing. On one hand the case has been made that he would be a better starting option and value then Eric Byrnes. On the other, we trust in Josh and the rest of the FO. Obviously they are privy to info that we don't have. Maybe something will shake out during spring training. |

Well we'll see soon enough.
The one thing that just really confuses me, although not directly related, is why take Krynzel in the Brewers trade? His only possible value to us would be as a BU CF, which we won't need unless Byrnes is gone. It would make sense if we were shopping Byrnes and thought we might get a deal, but there's been nothing to suggest that was ever going on. |

IIRC, Krynzel was sort of a throw-in in the deal; a "take him too, or the deal is off." Sorta like the slow, fat kid with glasses who was always picked last.
That was me, of course...

The part that I find confusing is the lack of publicity about Scotty's potential... to boost his trade value since it "seems" that that is the direction the team is going to take. UNLESS the real plan is to promote Byrnes' value and trade him instead.

The point on Krynzel was if he's out of options and neither team was that into him, why wouldn't the Brewers just release him? |

Krynzel is just 25 this season. He was a number 1 draft pick. He has some skills although his minor league record is nothing special.
http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/K/Dave-Krynzel.shtml
OTOH, he was injured at the start of the season (motorcylce, clavicle). He got private treatment, hide the injury for 2 months. He didn't recover for the start of the season. I think there is some talent there. It is doubtful he will ever realize it, but he has some worth.
There was no reason for the brewers to release him until they had to. Even now, the Dbacks might get something, not much, for him. There is some upside here.
He is cheap. At the very least, he is a prototypical 5 th outfielder to used for defensive purposes, pinch runner, swell a progress, start a scene or two. Clearly a throw in, but if Davavon is injured is a very poor man's Davavon. |

stu, your line seemed very familiar to me, and it took a few minutes for me to realize. nabokov's "lolita", the very beginning, as humbert humbert is describing the loss of his mother: "my very photogenic mother died in a freak accident (picnic, lightning) when i was three."
jkkoop[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[
sorry for that. (cat, keyboard.) anyway, just enjoyed the line, thanks. i'm going to go read "lolita" now.

Very good, mac. It is one of my favorite parenthetical clauses in literature. Another is "I have seen my head (grown slightly bald) brought in upon a platter." |

my favorite section of prufrock:
Quote: |
I grow old … I grow old …
I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled.
Shall I part my hair behind? Do I dare to eat a peach?
I shall wear white flannel trousers, and walk upon the beach.
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
I have seen them riding seaward on the waves
Combing the white hair of the waves blown back
When the wind blows the water white and black.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown. |

i read a LOT. seven years of studying english does that to you. and i've always been a book junkie, too, even as a kid.
the suckiest thing about it is that whenever we move, i have to pack up and carry more than a dozen bookcases full of huge literary tomes, the really mofoing heavy survey books from college. there really is no way to move all of those during that overlap weekend when one lease is ending and another beginning. just moving the books alone takes about a week or so. i always need to double up and pay rent twice for that month. it blows.
i just dug out my copy of "lolita." i'm starting a reread on that tonight. if anyone here hasn't read it, i highly highly highly recommend it. it's one of the best books ever written in the english language -- as a writer, that just pisses me off, seeing as it's written by a russian...

I know how you feel. My collection got so bad I had to rent two storage lockers. Then about 6 years ago I decided to donate all 6000 books to the library.
I miss my books but now they dont take up half my house.

Wait until you read Lev's novel.
My favorite Elliot work is Cats.
My cat's favorite too.
I sold most of my survey and other books back to the co-op to finance the next semester.
I still have my Norton's Anthology though (and still use it).
Am I channeling Joe Reaves here? |

i love my norton anthologies! they're enormous, hardcover, and covered through and through with my notes, underlinings, stars, plus signs, exclamation points, etc.
i always sold back my textbooks in every subject except for my major. so for a while, i was keeping all my english books, and now i'm keeping my medical texts. i just figure that way i'll always have my reference materials handy.

I've been writing it for 3 years, it's 1200 pages long, and I just finished chapter 2. Tolstoy would be so proud...

I used to read a LOT (English major syndrome)... now it's mostly reading on long plane rides or while waiting for events during "down" times. Most of my books I left behind to the Tuba City High School library when I moved to the Valley (not the ones I couldn't bear to part with tho).
Now, movies have taken over most of my shelf space... and they would have inhabited my entire wall space like kudzu in Georgia if Netflix didn't exist.
