Well...if Cocoa Colo made such an agreement, I would just drink Pepsi instead. Thats what I mean by it's not a good idea to limit your audience that way.

Baseball has to be careful not to kill off the Golden Goose and all that. But you can't legislate stupidity.

Some people say that pay-per-view is part of what killed off the massive popularity of boxing; Boxing ruled the sports world during the '70s and '80s but it's lost much of its luster today due to limited audiences.

I think thats a great point TAP.

It's not the only reason of course.....but it certainly could be a contributing factor.

I think Tyson knocking guys out in the 1st or 2nd round soured people on shelling out the bucks for PPV events too.

But you can certainly legislate stupidly!

While I'm certainly not an expert on baseball's antitrust exemption (nor do I portray one on TV or the internet), it would seem to me that the attempt to limit the access of consumers to one (and only one) favored seller would run afoul of the antitrust laws in general. If MLB, as a business, does so, it would be in the interest of the consumers (that's us, for the most part) to have the governmental watchdog take a peek at the situation, and see if MLB, as a business, is unfairly exploiting the buying public -- and to intervene, if such is found to be the case.

That's not anti-capitalist, by the way -- just anti-anti-competition.

Maury Brown weighs in.

Quote:
While having an exclusive agreement for MLB Extra Innings to only be on DirecTV, and therefore disenfranchising a large part of the possible viewing market is something that will raise the ire of some in Congress, I don’t know if it’s enough to get them actively engaged in anti-trust discussions of any seriousness. For one, there is the option of MLB.TV, so fans can at least watch online. While this is hardly an exceptional alternate solution, it is, none the less, a solution.

I guarantee that if enough complaints are raised in enough congressional offices, Congress will act. The anti-trust exemption doesn't have to be changed, necessarily -- it should be enough to prompt MLB to rethink its decision to simply suggest that if Congress doesn't like what it (may) find in the deal, the exemption will be changed/eliminated.

Of course, the unknown in the equation above is, what is "enough?" Very Happy

Now that Congress is controlled by the Democrats, the value of "enough" drops dramatically if the Republicans can somehow be linked to the DirecTV element and/or MLB... Wink

It's pretty apparent what Direct TV's goal is regarding PPV sports.

A proposal to make Major League Baseball's "Extra Innings" exclusive to DirecTV has drawn the ire of Sen. John Kerry.

The Massachusetts Democrat said he plans to raise the matter with the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission at a hearing Thursday.

"I am opposed to anything that deprives people of reasonable choices," Kerry said in a statement. "In this day and age, consumers should have more choices -- not fewer. I'd like to know how this serves the public --
