Estrada Exhausted
Quote:
Catching 15 of the 18 innings played Tuesday night certainly took its toll on Johnny Estrada.
"I'm still tired," Estrada said when he showed up to Coors Field on Wednesday. "I stayed in bed until 2 [p.m.] I woke up tired, not even hungry, just out of it."
I can appreciate being tired, although I have never had to catch for 15 innings. But compare his attitude to what follows in the story:
Quote:
The D-Backs bullpen combined to throw 12 scoreless innings Tuesday, including a career-high three by Brandon Medders, who finished the game.
"It tells you a lot about your guys, because nobody begged out," pitching coach Bryan Price said. "Medders sucking it up and giving us three was huge. So was Julio going out there for the second inning."
Since Medders was the lone reliever left and was on fumes by the 18th, Price asked Enrique Gonzalez to head down to the bullpen just in case he was needed. Not only had Gonzalez started Sunday's game, but he had thrown his between-start bullpen session on Tuesday.
After he started throwing down in the bullpen, though, Gonzalez said he was ready to go if needed.
Several caveats:
(1) Pitching isn't catching.
(2) We don't know the full conversation that Estrada had with Steve Gilbert; and so it is entirely possible that Estrada's comments, as quoted in the article, don't tell the full story.
In fact, if we hadn't already had the thread about Estrada (maybe) wanting to play for the Gnats, maybe I wouldn't have noticed this article.
However, I can't help but say how much I appreciate the players, such as Enrique, and Juan Cruz, who have said, "I'll do whatever the team needs me to do"; while others don't appear to have that attitude at all.

I think it's time for Estrada to begin to work on his overall health. Not just for his professional life but more importantly for his survival. Dropping his coffee carafe a day habit might do wonders for his hypertension and stomach ailment.

As someone who shares, with Estrada (although to a much greater extent on my part), the reality of being "gravitationally challenged" ("overweight" for the non-pc types here ), I can only agree with you, jethawker. Too much coffee... too much weight... too much stress... can all contribute to IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). Eating right and getting fit will add years to his life, both as a ballplayer, and in general.
After all, if you haven't got your health, you haven't got anything.
