Can we trade you Barry and his five assistants, three kept women, two dealers and his flaxseed oil company straight-up for Eric Byrnes?
Seriously, I hope that the Giants find a way to rid themselves of this human disgrace before they get to Scottsdale.
With his team of support, he could not get one of them to find the greenies?

We feel your pain, azgiantsfan, but you can have him. Good news -- he's not signed yet and may yet work his way out of a contract.
Blaming a teammate no less! Still, it fits his always blame someone else pattern of "I had no idea I was taking steroids."

I have to say, azgiantsfan is right. The guy is a disgrace. No arguement.
Selling out his teammate like that.......does anyone deserve an asskicking more than Bonds? |

Everyone and their mother in mlb takes speed. Why does he need to be such a dick that he has to blame that on someone else? |

If that was the roided out 2001 Bonds I'd be all over that. Now it isn't fair because you don't know what you'll end up getting.

How about this as a compromise AZgiantsfan. SF can HAVE Byrnes if you drop out of contract negotiations with Bonds. It'd be worth every penny watching him beg for a job and settle for 10MM less.
AZ would get to bat against Ortiz and watch EB do back-flips as the ball left the yard....priceless. |

Sweeney is supposedly one of the few guys on the Giants (along with Morris and Matheney) that actually has a good relationship with Bonds. Way to throw your friends under the bus, Barry. |

He's letting his loyal trainer rot in jail for him. Would you expect anything different from Barry?

What's depressing is that there are other teams who would sign him under those circumstances.

As Baltimore (got lucky, T.O. refused), Philadelphia, and Dallas have all demonstrated with T.O. without the winning return they expected.

C.W. Nevius at the SF Chronicle was less than sympathetic today.
C.W. wrote: |
Bonds, as usual, took the classy way out. He blamed his teammate, Mark Sweeney. He'd taken something out of Sweeney's locker, Bonds reportedly said, and it turned out to be amphetamine.
Thanks goodness we're getting to the real culprit here -- Mark Sweeney. What was Sweeney doing putting things in his locker that could easily be stolen? Wasn't he even considering the effect this would have on Bonds? Sweeney should know that the most important thing, above all else, is to protect Barry. What was he thinking?
(To be serious for a moment, Sweeney has denied that there was anything illegal in his locker, and it should be noted that no positive test has been reported for him.)
There are two possible theories here. First, Bonds has the worst luck ever when it comes to picking friends and associates. First his buddy Greg Anderson gives him flaxseed oil and it turns out to be steroids. And now, his locker buddy Sweeney leaves amphetamine around so he's almost asking Bonds to swipe some of it. What a couple of bad breaks.
Or, back here on planet Earth, it looks more likely than ever that Bonds has no regard whatsoever for drug rules or testing. It isn't as if the amphetamine testing was a secret. Baseball made a big deal of it. Bonds must have either figured he wouldn't get caught or, if he did, the positive test would be kept quiet.
Not any more. It is looking more and more like Bonds is poster boy for all the wrong things in baseball. The conventional wisdom is that his home run surge is steroid-fueled. And now, since Bonds apparently did not contest the amphetamine test results, it looks as if he was also popping greenies.
Kind of takes the edge off that gigantic fireworks celebration that was planned when, and if, Bonds breaks Hank Aaron's all-time home run record, doesn't it? |

Just give Barry a bottle of champagne spiked with another illegal substance -- LSD-25 -- and let him make his own fireworks...

Barry at least "does the right thing" regarding Mark Sweeney. From Rotoworld...
Barry Bonds-OF- Giants Jan. 11 - 9:30 pm et
Bonds said he did not get amphetamines from teammate Mark Sweeney, but did not deny a report Thursday saying he tested positive for the drugs last season.
"He is both my teammate and my friend," Bonds said in a statement. "He did not give me anything whatsoever and has nothing to do with this matter, contrary to recent reports." Bonds didn't comment further on the report or indicate what he might have taken the led to a positive test. Whatever it was, we're guessing it was more of an accident than anything else. If Bonds intended to cheat, he certainly has access to undetectable drugs. |

If B.O.N.D. and I are by some chance at a D-Backs-Giants game in SF when Barroids breaks the record (though to be clear, I hope to all that is holy that he never gets there), I will boo louder than anyone has ever booed anything or anyone.

Bonds told the league it was Sweeney's fault when he tested positive in 2006 and thought that nobody else (Sweeney included) would ever know what he'd said, but after catching justifiable heat this week he's now retracted his previous statement.
Laurence Miedema / San Jose Mercury News today wrote: |
SAN JOSE, Calif.—Barry Bonds hopes to continue his chase for baseball’s most hallowed piece of history. But it’s uncertain if he can outrun public sentiment now that the latest piece of controversial evidence against him has surfaced.
Bonds has yet to sign a $15.8 million, one-year contract with the team after both sides reached an agreement in principle five weeks ago. It has been speculated that a number of factors—ranging from the presence of Bonds’ entourage to the possibility he will be indicted for perjury in the BALCO Laboratories case—have held up the deal.
The Giants’ front office provided no vote of confidence for Bonds on Thursday.
Owner Peter Magowan and executive vice president Larry Baer did not return phone messages but issued a statement saying the team fully supported baseball’s stance against performance-enhancing substances.
“Last night was the first time we heard of this recent accusation against Barry Bonds,” the statement said.
As a first-time offender of the amphetamines program, Bonds’ positive test wouldn’t have been reported to the team. If he were to test positive a second time, he would face a 25-game suspension.
Sweeney and his agent, Barry Axelrod, did not return phone messages left by the San Jose Mercury News on Thursday. But Axelrod told the Daily News, “Mark was made aware of the fact that his name had been brought up, but he did not give Barry Bonds anything and there was nothing he could have given Barry Bonds.”
By simply mentioning Sweeney, Bonds, who is 22 home runs shy of supplanting Hank Aaron as baseball’s all-time home run king, breached one of the most sacred codes of clubhouse conduct.
“This year we had the best chemistry on the team. I felt like the team was clicking,” shortstop Omar Vizquel told the Associated Press on Thursday. “It’s sad a stupid instance like this might rupture something that was going pretty good. I don’t think the players will turn on each other.”
For the most part, Giants players, front-office officials and fans have stood behind Bonds for 14 seasons with the club. Among the controversies that have surrounded Bonds recently include:
- A federal grand jury investigating whether Bonds, during the Balco investigation in 2003, committed perjury when he testified he had never knowingly taken performance-enhancing drugs.
- The release of the book “Game of Shadows,” written by two San Francisco Chronicle reporters, which detailed Bonds’ alleged steroid use.
- The revelations, recently reported by the Mercury News, that Bonds chose not to make himself available to pinch hit in several key late-season situations last year.
- Bonds’ health woes, which in recent years have included surgeries on both knees and his left elbow. Bonds played in 130 games last season, but only 14 in 2005. He’s still a productive hitter, but his defense has tailed off dramatically.
Fans appear to be growing weary of Bonds’ troubles. The Giants’ announcement last month that they would bring back Bonds was met with mixed reaction. Most of the buzz on local talk shows and fan blogs Thursday was for the team to finally cut ties with Bonds.
So, where does this latest trouble leave Bonds and the Giants?
Bonds’ agent, Jeff Borris, did not return calls from the Mercury News on Thursday afternoon. Bonds issued a statement Thursday night saying he did not get amphetamines from Sweeney. But he didn’t deny the reports of his positive test.
Still, the fact Bonds dragged Sweeney’s name into the controversy isn’t likely to go over well in their world. Rafael Palmeiro was widely criticized in baseball circles for blaming his positive steroid test in 2005 on tainted B-12 shots he said he obtained from teammate Miguel Tejada.
Last June, Arizona Diamondbacks reliever Jason Grimsley was deemed a cheat and a snitch for naming former teammates who used performance-enhancing drugs after he was caught in a sting by federal authorities. Then there is Jose Canseco and his tell-all book.
“To bring another player into your stuff is wrong,” said former A’s right-hander Dave Stewart, an analyst for NBX.com. “You just don’t do that.”
Sweeney is one of the most well-liked players in the Giants’ clubhouse and, by most accounts, had a good relationship with the 42-year-old Bonds. It was Sweeney who persuaded Bonds to become Paula Abdul in drag for an “American Idol” parody during spring training. Then, Sweeney, along with Todd Greene, paid for champagne glasses to be engraved (and ordered the bubbly) for the entire team and clubhouse staff to toast Bonds when he hit home run No. 715 and passed Babe Ruth last summer. |

Associated Press tonight wrote: |
Sweeney 'angered' by reported Bonds implication
SAN FRANCISCO -- Mark Sweeney insists he never had any amphetamines in his locker for San Francisco teammate Barry Bonds to take.
Sweeney said Friday he was shocked to learn that Bonds apparently mentioned his name in connection with the slugger's failed amphetamines test last summer.
"There was nothing I had for him to take or for me to give to him," Sweeney told The Associated Press in a phone interview.
Sweeney moved forward after being told by Gene Orza, the union's chief operating officer, that his name had come up with a failed test for the stimulants. He wasn't informed of the player's name.
"That was kind of a shock," Sweeney said. "I heard my name was mentioned. I didn't know who mentioned it. I didn't know how or why."
Sweeney said he was tested several times for amphetamines last season and has never failed any drug tests.
Bonds released a statement to the AP on Thursday night that he never got amphetamines from Sweeney, though he didn't deny using them. A first positive test is not made public. Sweeney appreciated that gesture -- and felt it was necessary.
"From my side, I was hoping that [would happen]. I understood that's what needed to happen," Sweeney said. "It's over and done with for now and we can move on. We can start talking about baseball. It's something that's said and it's unbelievable. You shake it off.
"I treat everyone the same way," Sweeney continued. "I respect Barry just as much as I respect Noah Lowry and Matt Cain and the rest of the guys. Did I have a good relationship with him? Yes. Was it cordial? Yes. Did I hang out with him? No." |
