Former Yankee Murcer to have surgery Thursday
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Former New York Yankees star Bobby Murcer was set to have surgery Thursday to remove a brain tumor, the New York Daily News reported.

Murcer, 60, now a Yankees broadcaster, was scheduled to undergo surgery in Houston. He had been having headaches and feeling a loss of energy lately, and the tumor was discovered following an MRI on Christmas Eve, the newspaper reported Thursday.

"I'm feeling OK and we're just going to have to see what this surgery will bring," Murcer told the Daily News by phone Wednesday night. "I'm hopeful that everything will turn out OK and I'm thankful to have so many friends who are rooting for me."

Murcer was to be treated at the MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, one of the top cancer facilities in the nation, the newspaper said.

Even though I was a Met fan growing up as a kid in NY, I always liked Bobby Murcer alot.

(even then I understoond the value of a walk!! LOL)

His 1971 season was one heckuva season. He led the league in OPS+ with a 181 and should have been the MVP that year. In 1972 he was 2nd in OPS+, behind Allen, but of course he was playing Centerfield, and was more valuable that year too. He should have had back to back MVP's. And up till the all star break of 1973 he was still mashing hittng .306 with 18 homers at the break. (he dropped off sharply after the break though) Nonetheless for 2 1/2 years, Murcer was the best player in the AL

I hope he pulls through all this.

Bad news...

The tumor that was removed from Yankees broadcaster Bobby Murcer's brain during surgery last month was found to be malignant.

Awful news. Murcer, who spent 17 years in the majors before retiring in 1983, is scheduled to travel back to Houston this week to consult with doctors. "I'm not having to battle this alone, but am fortified with the most loving family, an abundance of wonderful friends and fans and the very best class of physicians," Murcer said in a statement. "I'm gaining confidence that with God and my faith leading the way, we will as a team put up an incredible fight. Please continue to send up prayers. That's all I can really ask of you at this time."

Murcer hopes to be in YES booth in 2007

In a radio interview Tuesday, Bobby Murcer said he's doing "fabulous" in his battle against a malignant brain tumor and hopes to continue broadcasting Yankees games for the team's YES network this season.

Appearing on The Michael Kay Show on ESPN Radio 1050 in New York, Murcer took questions from callers and said he feels "blessed" with all the support he has received.

"I'm just doing absolutely fabulous ... I haven't had any setbacks of any kind," Murcer said.

Murcer said he's leaning on his faith and has a "real sense of calm."

"Whatever will be will be. I feel that through my faith that God will heal me," Murcer said.

Murcer, who currently is undergoing treatment for the tumor, said he plans on attending Yankees spring training in Tampa, Fla., if he feels well enough to do so.

"I plan on being back in the booth and spring training if all goes well," Murcer said.

The 60-year-old Murcer had surgery in Houston on Dec. 28 to remove the tumor. It was revealed this month that the tumor was malignant.

The tumor was discovered following an MRI exam on Christmas Eve after Murcer had been having headaches and feeling a loss of energy.

Murcer played 17 seasons in the major leagues from 1965-83 and was a five-time All-Star and a Gold Glove-winning outfielder. He batted .277 with 252 home runs and 1,043 RBIs with the Yankees, San Francisco Giants and Chicago Cubs.

Murcer has won three Emmy Awards for live sports coverage as one of the voices of the Yankees.
