With us adding the Unit today, the Gnats had to counter that move--we're still a couple hundred pounds lighter at the end ot the day Cool

If I were a Giant fan, I would probably respond with

"Hey, at least we are not paying his fat ass 16 million over the next two years"

Giants have nothing to lose here. If he sucks, they cut him, nothing lost. If he rebounds, they got a pitcher for free. And they get to laugh at us.

No downside for them.

They don't have too many prospects worth worrying about that 40th spot.

has it been said yet whether this is a major league deal or a minor league one? because while the sucky prospects mean the 40 man has space, i'd just love to see the giants waste a 25 man space on russ.

their offense is going to be UGLY next year. starting pitching really seems like it's all they have going for them. way to shoot yourself in the foot, sabes.

The more the Giants pitch Russ Ortiz against the Diamondbacks, the less the Diamondbacks are hurt by the money they are still playing him. Very Happy

I understand the thought that Russ Ortiz could return to the Giants and return to form. But Russ Ortiz is toast. Toast with a lot of peanut butter on it.

Another Fucked-up call by Sabean.

We need new blood in the Giants organization.

It is pathetic that they would even try but the only risk here is a roster spot. Most teams can trim one person off of the 40 man roster if needed.

This is a low risk and decent reward scenario. Russ is only like 32 and if SF got 1 or 2 5.00 ERA years out of him for league minimum <if their gamble pays off> it really won't hurt much other than trying out prospects.

Provided of course they give him a very short leash and minimize the damage should the real Donut show up.

Actually, Sabean is obviously just a lot smarter than us and thinking long-term--he's already planning what he'll do with the #1 draft pick in 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011.... Damn, that 2014 Giants team looks like a winner!

Besides the obvious benefit of getting him in SF just so the Giants will suck even more, doesn't the minimum salary he receives from his current employer reduce the amount that AZ owes him? I know it's a small amount relative to the $16MM, but it's something...

IIRC, the D-Backs would get relief only if he was signed to a deal over league min and only get relief on the amount over league min.

Sometimes hope is all that's left...

From today's Giants.com mailbag...
Sentimentally, it's great to see Russ Ortiz back in the Giants orange and black. Hopefully, he resurrects his career and helps himself and the Giants attend to the unfinished business of a ring. Are the Giants at all considering Ortiz as a possible closer?

The only thing Ortiz could close would be the empty Krispy Kreme box after he's taken the last doughnut.
