I agree Kendrick and Moorad also deserve credit for bending their own rules to make this happen. |

The ownership has shown by bending the rules how much they wanted Randy back. I suspect they wanted Randy at least as much as Josh did, so they allowed it to be done in a way that gives Josh reasonable flexibility for future moves within the team's budget. |

Let's not fellate Kendrick and Moorad too much, OK? They are plenty responsible for contributing to this mess by signing Russ Ortiz and trading for Shawn Green in the first place.

Johnson's new deal calls for a $12 million signing bonus, of which $3.5 million is payable this year, $500,000 in 2008 and $4 million each in 2009 and 2010, a baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations told The AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because the terms weren't disclosed in Sunday's announcement. Johnson gets salaries of $4 million this year and $10 million in 2008.
As part of the trade, the Yankees would pay $2 million of Johnson's salary this year. That means Arizona would be responsible for $24 million: $5.5 million this year, $10.5 million in 2008 and $4 million each in 2009 and 2010.
In addition, the D-backs owe the five-time Cy Young Award winner just over $44 million, including accrued interest, from 2007-12. That money was earned by Johnson when he pitched for Arizona from 1999-2004, winning four Cy Youngs. |
RJ's salary in 07 will only take up $5.5m from the projected 65m payroll. That ought to help.

and Cashmen, and the rest of Yankee faithful, should be grateful in the way, Jb dealt with them, and gave them a more than fair return as well.

ONe thing to keep in mind... If i am correct, since it is a signing bonus, if randy decides to retire at the end of 07, he is still guaranteed that money... correct? |

Yes, but if you add it up, he'd only get $500k in 08 if he retired, and would forfeit $10m or so. The signing bonus which he would receive in 09 and 10 would've counted against the 07 salary anyhow

You are right... i screwed up somewhere in there... so no biggee really... Just a semantics thing really - They just call it a signing bonus schedule of payments rather than deferred salary.. hehe...

Also, with RJ pitching through 2008, AZ will have to wait until 2013 to see the first Dback inducted in the Hall of Fame...
Hopefully, in 2023, Brandon Webb will be another first ballot hall of famer with a Dbacks hat on... |
LOL--I love how Mark Grace is listed as a pitcher. He gets more hits than anyone else in the 90s, and his 1 IP gets him on the BPro list!

LOL...I actually watched the second part of that game a couple weeks ago and didn't realize that Tracy was leading off.
New Diamondback leadoff hitter?

There is no evidence of that from the past.

Nick Piecoro confirms shoewizard's assertion:
This morning Nick wrote: |
Randy Johnson's impact on attendance has been cited by many as a reason the Diamondbacks sought to reacquire the 6-foot-10 left-hander.
But just what kind of an effect did he have on the gate figures during his six-year stay in Arizona? And what could the club expect for 2007?
From 1999-2004, Johnson made 103 starts at home, according to game logs compiled by retrosheet.org. In those starts, the Diamondbacks drew an average of 37,023 fans. In all other starts, they drew 34,999, a difference of 2,024.
The impact is even more stark when broken down by day of the week. The Big Unit drew an additional 2,602 fans on weekdays vs. 1,468 more on weekends.
Finding the financial impact is much less cut and dry, but the Fan Cost Index provides at least a glimpse.
The FCI survey calculates the average cost for a family of four (two adults, two kids) to attend a game, factoring in things like parking, concessions and souvenirs. Last season, the cost for four at Chase Field was $147.71.
Using that figure (and assuming prices don't change too much from 2006 to 2007), if Johnson brings in 2,000 additional fans per game, the Diamondbacks could take in an extra $74,000 each game. And if Johnson - whose back may force him to miss the start of the season - starts 30 games this season, 15 at home, it could mean an extra $1.1 million for the Diamondbacks.
That might be a bit high. Johnson isn't expected to be nearly as overpowering as he was from 1999-2004, when he won four Cy Young Awards, so his gate draw may be less substantial.
Johnson's impact, of course, could go beyond the walk-up crowd. His presence could attract new season ticket holders or sway wary season ticket holders to renew. He could help keep the team in contention or lead the way to the playoffs, and in the process ratchet up interest in games started by other pitchers. |
Randy's real importance will be in helping the Diamondbacks maximize the improving talent we now have on the field (vs. 2004). Wins are the only thing that will draw more fans in AZ during the foreseeable future.

As has been mentioned before, Randy has been taken care of by the Diamondbacks' team physician, and they know he is doing well after his surgery. I really like the small deferment of his salary and how it is to be paid out over four years. Josh Byrnes has made some great moves since he took over as GM for the Dbacks, and I would forgive him if this move didn't work out. However, the more I analyze the Randy trade, the more I suspect this will turn out to be another great move for Josh Byrnes and the Diamondbacks. He bolsters the starting rotation considerably, and it gives more time for some of the great pitching prospects the Diamondbacks have to get more seasoning. In 2008 there may be enough talent among the young Diamondback pitchers that the team won't even want to try to resign Davis or Hernandez. |

Very well said, TAP. It's so true, there in nothing like winning to draw fans fans into the stadium. I really think RJ will show everyone he still got it. Now that he's here to stay for the rest of his career, he'll treat this team as his own.
Now, the physical, according to AZ Republic, he most likely will pass with flying colors since he has been counselting with Dr. Michael Lee for the past few months. Still, I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Can't wait to see Randy in the D-Backs new uniform. I think Randy's going to like the new colors, so much more manly than purple and teal.

I still wonder if the Yankees knew that RJ was consulting privately is the Diamondback team doctor about his back.
Quote: |
"We have come to an agreement in principle with Randy Johnson pending both us and the Yankees reviewing additional medical information," D-backs general manager Josh Byrnes said. "We will respectfully decline any comment until all medical information has been reviewed."
|
I am a natural conspiracy theorist, but it certainly seems like a case of conflict of interest if I ever saw it. The D-Backs may have had more access to RJ's current medical history than the Yankees.

They Yankees certainly knew the Diamondbacks' team doctor was handling his medical care. There is no conspiracy. |
