Well, it was the only way to turn the purple into Sedona Red.

Now I've properly portrayed TBU as the saviour of 2007.

Fun fact: Scottsdale has 10 times as many art galleries per capita as New York.

"Johnson is coming off back surgery in late October to repair a herniated disc, and he’s also had knee problems for several years, but the Diamondbacks are confident he will pass his physical because they already are fully aware of his background and even his present health condition."

"One reason is because Johnson has been consulting with Dr. Michael Lee, the Diamondbacks’ head team physician, for several months about his back. Lee wouldn’t advise the Diamondbacks to continue their pursuit of Johnson, the third-leading strikeout artist in baseball history, if he had doubts about the pitcher’s health."

I'm no expert and it probably doesn't matter to any parties involved except maybe the Yankees, but wouldn't that violate Doctor-Patient Confidentiality if Dr. Lee were to report to his employers, the DBacks, on RJ's health - with RJ being a private client?

hmm, has this negotiating window closed?

And if so, do we now wait for a physical to be passed?

The latest from NBC:

Quote:
D'backs reach two-year, $26M deal with Unit
Updated: Jan.7, 2007, 5:32 pm EST
NEW YORK (AP) -- Randy Johnson agreed Sunday to a $26 million, two-year contract with Arizona, leaving physicals and final approvals to complete his trade from the New York Yankees back to the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Johnson most likely will take his physical Monday, and the trade probably will be finalized Tuesday. Arizona general manager Josh Byrnes confirmed the agreement but otherwise declined comment until after the medical information is reviewed.

New York, which acquired the Big Unit from Arizona two years ago, would receive reliever Luis Vizcaino, minor league right-handers Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson, and minor league shortstop Alberto Gonzalez.

Johnson was owed $16 million this year in the final season of his January 2005 contract with the Yankees, a deal that called for $1.5 million to be deferred without interest until 2010.

His new deal calls for a $12 million signing bonus, of which $3.5 million is payable this year, $500,000 in 2008 and $4 million each in 2009 and 2010, a baseball official with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the terms weren't disclosed in Sunday's announcement. Johnson gets salaries of $4 million this year and $10 million in 2008.

Well, this doesn't make much sense to me.

It's nice that RJ worked with our financial situation, but adding more deferred debt for '09 and '10???

I hope it is tied to paying down some other RJ debt, otherwise it seems they are going down the same path they've been publicly bashing over the last 3 years.

So... let's see if I got this right:

ARI pays RJ $3.5M (part of his $12M signing bonus) + $4M (salary) in 2007, minus the $2M the NYY sent in the deal = $5.5M in 2007!!!

In 2008 RJ gets $500K (bonus) + $10M salary = $10.5M

In 2009 and 2010 he gets $4M (bonus) per + deferment payments?

Josh scored RJ 2007/8 for peanuts and so-so prospects. Granted he's still owed $40M, but he left alot of flexibility for 2007 and 2008 to compete.

So, what does Josh do with the extra spending cash in 2007?

More from ESPN (only quoting relevant text not in above article):

Quote:
"We're very excited and very happy for Randy, We think it's a win-win for everybody," said Alan Nero, who represents Johnson along with Barry Meister. "It was very complex because there was a lot of legal work -- it was the third time the contract has been redone. Other than that, I think it went very smoothly."

Because of the cash involved, commissioner Bud Selig must approve the trade. The players' association also might want to review the restructuring of his contract.

If the trade goes through, Johnson would join an Arizona starting rotation that includes reigning Cy Young winner Brandon Webb, Livan Hernandez and Doug Davis. In their only other major move in the offseason, the Diamondbacks acquired the left-handed Davis from Milwaukee in a six-player deal that sent catcher Johnny Estrada to the Brewers.

As part of the trade, New York would pay $2 million of Johnson's salary this year. That means Arizona would be responsible for $24 million: $5.5 million this year, $10.5 million in 2008 and $4 million each in 2009 and 2010.

In addition, the Diamondbacks owe the five-time Cy Young Award winner just over $44 million, including accrued interest, from 2007-12. That money was earned by Johnson when he pitched for Arizona from 1999-2004, winning four Cy Youngs.

Johnson had until 5 p.m. EST Sunday to reach an extension under a 72-hour window granted Thursday by the commissioner's office. His agents held several telephone discussions with the Diamondbacks to reach the agreement.

Johnson's new agreement came two years and one day after he agreed to his extension with the Yankees. He went 103-49 with the Diamondbacks and helped them beat the Yankees in the 2001 World Series, going 3-0 against New York. He went 17-11 with a 5.00 ERA last season, and had back surgery Oct. 26.

He failed to win both of his postseason starts with the Yankees, and on Friday the Daily News ran a back-page headline that read: "GOOD RIDDANCE."

Alright MFY: IT'S ON!!!! Mad

Wow, just wow...

I never expected the FO to defer any $ on this new deal. There maybe other nuances including his already deferred $ that have not been made public?

We still have a few arb players on the roster. Davis and O-Dawg are gonna get a raise.

Let's deal Byrnes to the Cubbies for Scott Eyre.

So why are we using a signing bonus vs working it into the salary? I'm sure there's a legitimate reason, but I've never heard of it.

Nice avatar, BOND.

The Dbacks already owe RJ 44m through 2012. It doesn't really matter if they owe him extra $8m in 09/10. Plus, it helps the team because after 08, all the dead money (Green and Ortiz) will be off the team's payroll. De facto, the Dbacks will be paying RJ 50+ m through 2012.

This was a nice gambit to fit everyone's salary in the 65m budget for 07

Thanks! I worked on it all morning. Seemed... apropriate. Taxed my Photoshop skills a bit.

I think Josh Byrnes did a great job. Like you said, they're paying millions to RJ in 2009-12 anyway, what's an extra $4M when you consider Donut Boy's (I pray he goes to SF Laughing ) and Green's salaries will be off the books. When is Gonzo finally paid off?

This is a true testament of RJ's endurance and greatness.

BPro asks: Who else is turning 43?

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/unfiltered/?p=133

Also, with RJ pitching through 2008, AZ will have to wait until 2013 to see the first Dback inducted in the Hall of Fame...

Hopefully, in 2023, Brandon Webb will be another first ballot hall of famer with a Dbacks hat on...

Great link, lev.

Wow, Cecil Fielder really ate himself into early retirement. He peaked at age 26, hovered slightly below there until age 32, and was dust at 34.

I think this is a great move for the DBacks. It gives them flexibility to add other needed pieces in the next few years. After looking at this entire deal I think Josh Byrnes gets an A for a deal that looked like it could have turned out horribly.

Well, the only weird part is that RJ will be getting paid 4M in 2009, and 2010 - to be in retirement.

My worry is that he will cost us one of our young players when they get expensive...

still - it looks like a pretty solid deal to me...

Credit also goes to Kendrick and the other owners for making an exception and allowing some deferment of payment. I have no doubt this is a rare event not likely to happen again anytime soon; but by doing this they don't screw up the team by pressuring Josh to unload important player(s) to meet budget this year and even allow a part or two to be added. The wheeling and dealing for this offseason by the Diamondbacks could continue a little. Very Happy
