You can't take a surly, withdrawn misfit who happens to have been blessed with the skill to throw baseballs past bats and expect him to survive in an environment populated by vibrant human beings.

Randy Johnson was out of his element among people, period, and if you are not a people person, New York is not the place for you. No doubt he will be happier back in the desert of Arizona, where reptiles thrive.

The Diamondbacks aren't much better than they were in 2004, but Johnson can't wait to go back.

BTW Wallace, I've been to NY more times than I care to count, and "in an environment populated by vibrant human beings," Levski's one of the few I've had the pleasure to meet that will look you in the eyes rather than at the ground or away when you walk by. Vibrant = paranoid and rude? Rolling Eyes

That's a pretty brutal article and an example of what I was referring to ( NY environment ) when I took the under on the RJ '07 poll.

It's really shit. I know it's sports journalism and all but that article was about as unprofessional as possible. It sounded like a neocon talk show host talking about Clinton.

Levski's definitely a rare breed there (but he has Az. roots)

I know a number of other New Yawkers (film community) that are also pleasurable to meet.... but that may be due them living in a "fantasy" world of sorts that allows them to overlook the shitty environment or to just look for shitty cinematic items to put into their indie films. Wink

General public persona for New Yawkers is vibrantly rude and obnoxious, however, with an attitude that they live in the center of the universe.

I hope Randy reads that Newsday trash and stores it in the back of his mind until June 12-14th, when the D-Backs go to Yankee Stadium during Interleague play. The Skankees better pray his turn in the rotation doesn't come up in that series. Twisted Evil

is it a requirement, if you want to live in new york, to act like you're somehow superior to those who deign to live anywhere else? does all of manhattan stop twice a day for a circle jerk about what a great place they live in? i don't get the mindset. i mean, when i think about mesa, i rarely if ever get a hardon. so what's with new york? must be the smell of urine? the miserable climate? the lack of sky? the horrendous traffic? foreign incomprehensible cab drivers? or maybe they're all just thrilled to live so close to levski.

Here's the reply I posted there:

Wow, bet that makes you feel superior! Let me know when a human being writes this column. Inasmuch as I have the choice to live anywhere I want, I choose Arizona, rather than NYC. Guess that makes me a stupid reptile in your book.

You also wrote, "The Diamondbacks aren't much better than they were in 2004..." You *do* know how to read the won-lost column, right? You also know how to read the assessments of team's farm systems? Don't be surprised to find the Diamondbacks back in the playoffs, even as early as this year -- thanks to help from the pitcher you disdain.

Oh, and, of the Diamondbacks and the Yankees, which team has the more recent World Series rings?

See ya in the post-season...

Where's the line about us all being reptililes, out here? I was hoping this was going to be a National incident.

Guys, thanks for the nice words. [I assume they are nice... are they not? Are you messing with me? Better not be. You don't want to see my NY part Laughing ]

Matthews is another hack. His articles, while maybe reflecting the anger of the casual Yankee bandwagon fan, do not represent all residents of NYC.

Just like Gambo's drivel does not mean that every resident of the valley of the sun is an idiot. Let's not get carried away with over-generalizations.

That being said, there are A LOT of people in NYC that I can live without.

Very true indeed, Lev.

Gambo might have been a poor AZ example though, considering he's a Yankee fan imported from NY.

Virtually everything that Matthews said is irrelevant. It's essentially true that Johnson is not a good teammate, but that's largely mitigated by the fact that he's a pitcher: He goes only every 5 days; pitchers are generally viewed as "different" anyway; and he's already a legend, so his young teammates will pretty much leave him alone, no matter what he says or does.

What IS relevant is what Matthews did NOT discuss and what nobody knows:

Will Johnson's back and knee hold up AND if they do - what does he have left?

And that's what Shoewizard and Levski's bet is all about.

Wallace really went over the line. Man, the guy needs a reach around. Thank goodness A-Rod, is still there for him. Laughing Holy cow.

Yankees Exercise Litte Known Return Policy

Yankee owner and CEO (Commandante Executive Officer) George Steinbrenner has decided that he will invoke the little known return clause in Randy Johnson's contract. "Let's just say ,it didn't fit," Commandant Steinbrenner commented." He's in just about the same condition since we bought him or even better," Steinbrenner offered alluding to the Yankee financed back surgery. "Look I've still got the receipt if anybody wants to see it," The pugnacious commandant threatened.

Diamondback officials were heard to murmur about the date of purchase and whether the original packaging was available. " How can they think we can take this return! Receipt or not , it's been years since the purchase and we haven't seen piece one of the original packaging. How can they expect us to resell this product or even return it to the manufacturer after all this time and no box!"

Johnson's take on all this was to say: "I can't believe George kept the receipt after all these years. I may have the box up in the attic in Phoenix. I'll go wherever they send me. Shit millions of dollars and performance doesn't even matter...It's almost as good as being a CEO!".

I just got back from New York a few weeks ago. What I find amazing is how everyone walks around like zombies listening to their I-pods.

Also, what he said about the necessity of being a people person to survive New York is pure BS. RJ and A-Rod are polar opposites; the former is an extreme introvert and the latter being overly eager to please. Yet, the fans treated them both with such disdain. New York fans are such a spoiled rotten bunch from years of enjoying successes bought by King George's money. I hope they'll never see another WS trophy. And, what an honor that our team was the one to start their WS drought!
