I just came here to post that...I WAS SHOCKED AZ WAS ON ESPN...
Anywho, if this deal could get away with just dumping Julio, a couple mid-level prospects, and then getting some ownership approval to loosening those strings on their pocketbooks...Hey, they have their #2 lefty pitcher. |

So the Diamondbacks and the Padres are in a bidding war? I like the move for the Dimandbacks even if they have to pick up all the Yankees' finanical obligation if they are able to renegotiate a contract for 2 years. They could be wrong with a 2 year $24 million dollar contract, but this is Randy Johnson who has a lot of meaning for this team and the fans. This is a gamble I would take. I hope that the major leaguer being referred to in the trade is a bullpen pitcher. I don't think the Ynakees would be interested in a position player. |

Someone on another board made a good point about the Yanks needing a 1B and that the major leaguer may be Tony Clark seeing as he can play 1B and his contract is only one year long. |

I do believe that TC is a member of the Full No Trade Clause Club.

Not any more. That was only for his first year of the contract.
Anyway, they should definitely take a chance on the Big Unit. He was injured last year AND pitching in yucky NY in the AL. Put him back in AZ, healthier, NL... there are just too many positives also from an organizational perspective.
Check-out his numbers last year and say to yourself AL, Yankee Stadium, HERNIATED DISC... but still 172 K to 60 BB... with a (neutralized) 4.58 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP.
Bring him to the warm desert and bring on the next Series run! He's AZ's star, not NY's.

I think it would be more along the lines of... Juan Cruz, or Jorge Julio, or... Conor Jackson. If it's Conor, Josh should be laughing and telling Cashman to blow him.

Well slap my ass and call me Suzy...
I was thinking that it was for the whole term of his contract.

I'll call bs on this one. According to KFMB via mlbrumors the dbacks are "offering" Chad Tracy and 2 prospects for RJ.

I think this is only talk to show that we're "trying" to improve the team. No chance JB takes RJ on. Even for that 2nd year. RJ's stuff is gone, he's coasting on fumes, and will barely be able to make it through '07, let alone '08.
Also, there is no reason to beleive that RJ will up the gate. The attendance for RJ games and others throughout his AZ stay was nearly identical. The team we're playing has had much more impact on attendance than who we have on the hill.
Besides, if we're going to give up some players or pick up $16MM, I'd rather we use those resources to go after Westbrook.

Well, what's funny about that is on the last edition of one of those MLB.com shows, at the very end, for no reason... there's Chad Tracy in action. Kind of a preview of the next show it seemed. His name keeps coming up. Really makes me wonder what Josh plans on doing for 3b if that's the case.
I was just at the liquor store buying some party supplies and the dude that works (big baseball fan, Yankees fan) there told me that he had just heard on the radio or whatever that it was a three team trade WITH the Padres. And NYY were interested in TWO AZ OFers... whose names he couldn't remember. Chop and slice that one any way you want. The rumor's making it's way around, though.
And it's now on the MLB site.
I think this rumor's got some teeth.

I think when a guys numbers are SO much worse with runners on, you just have to go to the obvious: He is having problems pitching from the stretch. His high ERA is not a "fluke" In this case, it is most likely that he just couldn't get the push from the stretch that he got from the windup, and thats probably connected to the back injury, but could just as likely be his knee problem......
Remember the knee? The one that is bone on bone and requires injections to keep lubricated?
Anyway, clearly there is a problem pitching from the stretch, and that is why his ERA was so much worse than his periphs and FIP would indicate
None on .206/.271/.324 595 OPS Against (481 AB)
Runners on .321/.363/.564 927 OPS Against (296 AB) |

Along the lines of that alledged three team deal...it could be possible that a 3rd team could be offering some payroll relief in exchange for prospects. |

What are the Yankees likely to be looking for in a trade for RJ? Do they have any specific holes or needs?
I guess they could use an extra good reliever (Julio or Cruz?) and a first basemen (Tony Clark or Conor Jackson), and could always use starting pitching prospects (Nippert, Owings, or one of the Gonzalezes?). And if they deal Melky Cabrera, they might be interested in Bryes as a backup outfielder.
So what are the most likely trade packages for RJ? |

Uh, this is Randy Johnson we're talking about here, not Johan Santana.

I'd trade all of the above for Johan Santana <_<

I was being facetious, of course. I found it funny that Leperchaun (welcome to the board, by the way; don't let me being an a-hole dissuade you from sticking around) would lump Clark and Jackson in the same sentence... |

Haha, no problem
I was just listing a number of players as trade possibilities, not that a viable package would have to include all of them.
But still I'm afraid the Yankees might want a lot in return for Johnson. Don't forget that we gave up quite a bit for Doug Davis, a no-name lefty starter. |

Well, I feel we got more in the Davis trade than we gave up. Isn't that what a good GM does?
It'll be interesting to see what the Yankees want. I personally think they want to get rid of RJ's $16m contract so they can sign Clemens.
They won't get prospects or quality major leaguers AND have the other team pick up his entire $16m.
In this case, I really hope AZ picks up all of the $16m and doesn't give up anyone meaningful. Give them Tony Clark and Jorge Julio

Btw, I absolutely do not think the Yankees want Julio and Clark.
Just wanted to post a link to (gack) Will Carroll's latest ramblings. Fwiw.

There are also several trades in the works, including the long-rumored Randy Johnson to Arizona deal and one three-team deal that has three BIG names. I’m going to tease you with the last one because it’s close enough that reporting it just might jinx it.
|
Since Carroll is predicting it, it won't happen... but let's throw out some 3 way deals that involve BIG names. Anyone?
