For all of us arm chair GM's how about a game to kill some offseason time.

Here's the gist, you have all of the D-Backs current resources <players and salary of 60MM> and need to put together our 2007 team.

Rule:
Must stay within budget
All trades must be win/win <make each team better>

Scoring:
Based equally on 3 aspects of your team:
1- Quality of 2007 team you're fielding
2- Marketibility to the fans of that team
3- Effects on future teams <ie if you trade Upton you're dead in this category>

For reference here's Shoe's salary guideline from a previous post:

Eric Byrnes for Sean Marshall, and Angel Guzman (He could be left out if Cubs balked).

Get one more reliever, and i go to battle with that team...

1) After Melky Cabrera gets traded (wishful thinking, but a few rumors say he's being shopped), trade Byrnes/Julio to NYY for Randy Johnson and $6MM in cash.
2) Dump Tony Clark for scraps (or even throw him in the NYY trade if they're interested).
3) Insert Hairston on the roster with Davanon getting a couple of starts a week around the OF.
4) Go to battle with Valverde as the closer with Juan Cruz the backup plan if he fails.

I know I'm pushing it on the Yankee dollars coming this way (as well as lowering the callup amount from $1MM to $800K). I had to get to the budget. But the EVTrib said this morning we have $10MM or so to spend, so I think even with a couple of million less coming this way this looks alright.

I truly believe that bring Randy back would be a box office draw. Not necessarily in the walk-up sales sense, but one of those situations where for a few weeks after the trade there's an uptick in season-ticket sales. There's downside of course, but I beleive he'd immediately be our 2nd best starter (whereas Mulder slides in at #4 or so). I like the upside/PR combo. It's a one-year deal allowing both sides to feel the situation out. I feel strongly about this for some reason.

Ok, here are my moves.

First, I'd trade Oakland for Haren <if at all possible>. I would give up Tracy, Nippert, En Gonzalez and anything I could get in a trade for Byrnes & Jorge Julio + Cash.

Next, I would trade Hernandez to Seattle for Beltre + Cash.

This gives us a solid pitcher long term at a good salary and improves our defense tremendously at the corner. I also believe Beltre's offense would show some significant improvements at Chase Field.

Pos   Player   Salary
C    Snyder     400,000

2   Haren     2,200,000

Am I going crazy, or is tmar trading away players we don't even have?!

Let me score the first 2 submittals, qudjy1 why don't you critique my moves. Hopefully a few others will come up with some other options.

Ratin on a scale of 1-5 <5 being best>

1. Quidjy1-
Quality of 2007 team- 3
-You've added some young pitching depth but Marshall would have to be reborn to contribute much to the 07 team in ways of wins.
Marketability- 2
-There isn't much here that is going to impress the common fan, in fact getting rid of Byrnes for a virtual no-name will likely decrease the team's marketability. Understand that marketability has zero or even an inverse relationship with smart baseball on most occasions but is a necessary evil in this "business".
Effect on future years- 4
-You've kept the core together and added a cheap pitching prospect. All in all a good move.

2. Aaron-
Quality of 2007 team- 3.5
-Call this my RJ bias but I think he's a solid pitcher, not an Ace or #1/2, but if he's healthy he'll eat innings and there's a small chance for a nice upside swing. There is however a much larger chance his production might decrease below the level of usefulness.
Marketability- 4
-We're nostalgia freaks in AZ and I think bringing back RJ would mask losig Byrnes and then some. They could really sell the "quest for 300" concept if they could get around the fact that it we most definitely take 2 years to get it.
Effect on future years- 2
-You didn't burn any prospects in the trade not commit us to any long term money, which is good. You didn't, however, provide anything tangible for post 07 either, other than a shot at resigning RJ which might hurt the team more than improve it.

Maybe I'm Josh Byrnes???

Note that I posted this 3 days before the 1st post of the 51-page thread.

My proposal was for giving up a lot less than we actually did though.

Great offseason for the Diamondbacks. I'm ready to get going now.

If you can pull off getting Hairston on the roster in 07, I'll buy your "Free Scott Hairston" shirt for you.

Well we gotta move him somewhere. But I noticed when Josh was speaking the press conference that he looked like he thought we were getting a steal and that we're going to compete this year.
