from the article on wells, already linked... but worth posting

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=80382

Quote:
TO THE MAX
Max Scherzer, the D-Backs’ No. 1 draft pick in June, recently underwent further medical evaluation by Dr. Lewis Yocum to allay any fears the D-Backs might have that Scherzer might need surgery, agent Scott Boras said.

“Medically we have delivered that information to (general manager Josh Byrnes),” Boras said. “Everything is fine. We are prepared to move forward’’ with negotiations.

Byrnes did not want to make public the D-Backs’ opinion on Scherzer’s condition.

“Obviously, we are sorting through that as part of the negotiation,” Byrnes said. “I don’t want to get into specifics.”

Scherzer was shut down because of shoulder issues early in the college season but returned to form down the stretch at the University of Missouri.

For better or worse, this is the final time negotiations with a drafted player will last this long. A new provision in the collective bargaining agreement dictates a June draftee who is unsigned by Aug. 15 will go back into the draft pool for the next season.

Similar, but not really. They're nowhere near the deadline to sign him and he wouldn't start throwing for the team for another 1 1/2 months, so why not take your time and be certain that the kid is healthy first? I think it's smart to wait.

Boras has got his hands full on a number of fronts anyway right now.

Only if they're a Bora$$ client or the #1 overall.

I'm not seeing the problem..no matter when you sign the guy...if he signs, he signs. As long as it's before the deadline. In the past three cases of Drew, Upton and Scherzer, all have been either Boras or #1 picks like Oden said above. And with that comes careful negotiations to pay this unproven player the right amount of money.

There are negotiators who believe that waiting until the last minute gets you the best deal. Boras is generally one of these.

The trick with these guys is not to get flustered by the delay and be patient. I'm not sure that Upton got that much more money (in current value) than he would have gotton had he signed early. He also lost a year of development and a year towards Rule 5. This was not an issue with Drtew because of the roster spot. I expect Boras will demand a spot for Scherzer.

Boras also believes in getting the most money for his client. This is good if the money is there. It is not so good if the team says no as they did with Harrington (Boras was his second, at least, agent and turned down a 1M or so from the Padres because it wasn't enough). I get the feeling the Boras is often negotiating fo his next client and his rep as much as for the client in that specific case where sometimes it might be better to sign early for sure money albeit a bit less money.

However, statistically Boras does a lot better over the long for his clients by his tactics. That one occassionally gets screwed is made up for by the results he gets for other clients by his tactics and rep.

Boras may be part of the reason that we got both Drew and Scherzer so late in the draft. Many GMs didn't want to deal with the negotiations.

If we are patient dealing with Boras and can sign him for a fair price then it may be worth the wait.

well, scherzer was hurt and was dropping like a rock. I was surprised the dbacks took him at 11. i'd almost have rather gambled on someone like bard.

that being said, my top two choices (longoria and lincecum) were gone by then so I didn't really care that much whom the dbacks took at 11...

with the steal of Anderson, which I feel sorry for catchers, because he has such wicked movement, Schezer can go back to the draft as far as I care too. Poor high school catchers must of had some swollen hands from him.(Ando)

What I'm trying to say is that having Boras as your agent may motivate some FOs to pass to their next choice on draft day.

According to Matt Nestor of the Columbia Daily Tribune, three things are holding up the Max Scherzer signing:
1) Scott Boras is busy right now taking care of his FA clients.
2) Arizona's concern over Max's biceps tendonitis.
3) The departure of Mike Rizzo who drafted Max, forcing Boras to deal directly with Josh Byrnes.

"When steps get taken, I get informed. I’m in the decision process on the way everything needs to go," Scherzer said. "I’m in contact with them (Scott Boras and staff) a bunch, not always about a contract, but just about what to do baseball-wise, workout-wise and different things like that."

Here's some Max Scherzer vids.

Where's the money going to come from to sign this guy now that the Unit must be paid?

1. Max Scherzer from the stretch.

2. Max Scherzer wind-up.

Who hired that cameraman? It's almost a good thing that I had a headache already because I certainly would have had one after that.

A month and Change until Spring training, and no word on Scherzer. I hope he signs in time to be ready for the season...
