Mulder in AZ will be JB's biggest gamble move since getting in AZ, so I hope we can get Mulder just to see if JB's intuition is up to par with most MLB GM's.

I like that Josh only guaranteed money for 07. That is the smart thing to do.

I'm really not sure about Mulder, unless this is a gamble for the '08/'09 seasons. It's pretty much pointless to spend $ on him for '07, unless it's basically a "he'll be here by the middle of the year, so we can try out our own guys til then". And then it's a decent gamble if it's only minimal guaranteed $ for '07. I'd also be in favor of putting in some kind of crazy incentives for his '08/'09 years. If he's producing, then we should have no problem paying him.

But otherwise, I think this is a move to see if we can get a deal on him given the extenuating circumstances. I say don't take the risk, and use that $ for next yr, if only to buy out some our guys arb yrs.

http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=80521

interesting article with a host of goodies.

"The D-Backs have at least inquired about virtually all of the names that have popped up in published reports, including A’s starters Danny Haren and Joe Blanton, the Pirates’ young starting group and free agent David Wells. "

I like the idea, but the price will be crazy (think Jennings)
Anyways, Mulder's worth the risk IF he can come pretty cheap next year.
Otherwise, let him go to Texas.

Someone else posted that earlier. Yes, it's good to know that JB is exploring all avenues to try to upgrade the team while avoiding this out of control free agent market.

Didn't see this one posted in here yet. Seems like Mulder really likes Arizona, but wants JB to pony up a little more.

I'm not saying it's a bad offer, just that it must be an interesting read. A back-loaded contract with a series of options. It's obviously a very pro-AZ contract or Mulder would be making press conferences right now.

It is not clear to me whether the Diamondbacks will eventually sign Mulder. It is clear to me, however, the Diamondbacks have some money left to spend and they aren't satisfied standing pat. This is just my gut feeling, but Mr. Green I expect at least one significant move from the team before Sunday.

That article mentioned us looking into Haren. I wonder what we'd have to trade to get him <likely the farm>.

You should check with Allstar, he knew that Mulder was a lock to go to AZ when he started this thread. Razz

I'd have to say that a one year deal with an option of 4 more would appeal more to me than just a one year deal. If we could look him over on year 1 and then lock him up for 4 more if he performs or let him go if he doesn't, that would be worth bigger dollars.

It's no slam dunk that Mulder will sign with the Diamondbacks; but what I failed to recognize earlier this month when, as Tap has remembers, I said there was no way Mulder would sign with the Diamondbacks, is the geniune interest Mulder has of playing for the Diamondbacks. If Mulder decides to give Arizona a break on the contract, some sort of deal could get done.
