I was just thinking from the other side of the coin on this. Does it seem that perhaps Byrnes is being overly cautious by not pulling the trigger on trades or pursuing free agents? Like I've said before, I personally don't, because after the team getting burned in the past and currently having a GM that isn't purely reactionary, it seems OK.

Anyone else want to weigh in?

I don't think there is a way for him to be too cautious. I think that he doesn't want to make a move just to make a move and I don't blame him. If it's not the perfect deal then don't bother. The Dbacks are a year away from really contending and why do anything to make this team a little better now while hurting us down the road. They are cashed strapped and not really in a position to truly make a world series run this year. If come July they are in the mix then make a big deal. As of now I'm happy with the Doug Davis deal, especially if Dana Eveland turns out to be anything, and add a few lower level free agents or smaller trades. Fine tune this team now and make small tweaks.

Count me among those who support the way JB appears to be moving -- or not moving, as the case may be!

The mindset of making a trade so as to appear to be doing something almost always costs more than you gain in the long run. When the right deal comes along, make it -- otherwise, sit tight, and manage what you've got -- and we have a lot going for us!

He'll make a move when it's right I guess.

I really don't have a problem with him not pulling the trigger on any additional trades yet,.....well except for not pulling the trigger on the Eric Byrnes trade. Twisted Evil

Byrnes has done fine in my book. Some of the other GMs have thrown caution to the wind, and they will get bitten on the butts for it. I think the move the Diamondbacks made with the Brewers was a good one, and there is still plenty of time for other transactions to take place.

Exactly, I think all this pressure to get something done DURING the Winter Meetings is bullshit anyway. Operating under some kind of false deadline for PR purposes is not the way to make a well thought out, reasoned decision. These guys make trades all year long using the phone and e mail and the occasional face to face when their teams play each other.

They should close the damn thing to media and just surface after 3 days with the results. More work would get done that way.

I believe in Josh Byrnes... and that he'll make the best possible moves when the time and deal are right.

MUCH prefer this to the way the former FO operated--the get a "shiny new toy" to dangle to attract fans and sell tickets for the upcoming season.

While this worked fine for the quality of baseball during the 1999-02 years when the personnel budget was wide open, it didn't work out when the owners demanded fiscal responsibility--most notably with the Richie Sexson toy.

In JB We Trust.

Amen to that. I think winning will sell a lot more tickets than another great Troy Glaus/Richie Sexson/Russ Ortiz/Insert Name here deal. Josh Byrnes is smart and if Moorad and Kendrick get out of his and their own way the Dbacks will be set for years to come.

I like JB's moves a lot. He's young and cautious, but he's the ultimate pragmatist. He's doing the best he can with the resources available - as Kendrick pointed out - while not mortgaging the future of the franchise.

Was there a specific one you were referring to? Or just a general move him for whatever we can?

Last year the Javier Vasquez trade was not done until after the Winter Meetings on december 14th. There is still time.

I'd just as soon he be as cautious as he wants and make the right trade or sign the right FA then to rush in just to make a splash at the winter meetings (as hard as it is for me to look on the internet every day and find that nothing has happened yet). The games I want to win start in April. There's still a lot of time to make a good deal.

You may be able to find at least a couple others to agree with you on this one shoe. Wink
