Latest from the Walt Disney World's 2006 Baseball General Manager's Winter Meeting in Florida.

1) Josh Byrnes have spoken to the agent of Keith Foulke and he'll likely have a tour of Chase Field just like what Mark Mulder had. If he signs, he'll likely compete for the closer's job with Jose Valverde, if he's not traded.

2) Greg Cliffton, Mark Mulder's agent, will get his medical report to the Diamondbacks as soon as possible, allowing the Diamondbacks to make an offer.

3) Like what the other thread said, Chat Tracy is being danggled to the Angels, likely for Joe Saunders and Chone Figgins.

4) Rangers have gave the list of pitchers they want, including Nippert and Owings, but they are pretty far apart on the deal.

What would we be interested in from the Rangers? They need pitching more than we do.

Maybe they're looking at Teixeira if they're thinking of trading Tracy.

Wouldn't AZ be be better off with Tracy than with Figgins and a finesse lefty?

Teixeira hasn't played 3rd for 3 years. They'd be looking to get Blalock. I guess if you're going to buy on Blalock, his value is probably as low as it's ever been.

Depends what they think they got. Maybe KC think shitty, overpaid pitchers are worth much more.

I never had a problem with Miggie. He wasn't an ace, but short of that, he was versatile, ate innings with decent ERA, and nutted up in the World Series.

$8M is a little much, but I'd rather something like the $6 we're giving Livan had gone to Miggie instead. But only for one or two more years. Definitely not 3.

Rumor has it the White Sox are willing to trade Garcia for Rowand and a few RP's. We should be all over this using E Byrnes and a few RP's of our own.

(Doug) Melvin had contact Tuesday with representatives for free agent infielder Jeff Cirillo and planned to e-mail a one-year offer later in the day. Melvin insisted that there would be room on the '07 roster for Cirillo, Counsell and Tony Graffanino, a free agent who was offered arbitration last week. Cirillo, who is represented by Ken Felder, has also drawn interest from the Diamondbacks, Giants and Twins.

Why the hardon for Andy Green? Doesn't AZ have better parts already? And isn't he easily replaceable as it is?

I think it was more the thought process that went behind it.

Damion Easley should not have been taking those at bats.
It's a clear indication of a problem with Melvin that still exists today, and Josh is just as culpable, for giving Melvin his PV Toys.

No hardon for Andy Green. He was just an example of a guy who was screwed over in favor of a useless veteran guy. I fear that Cirillo on board would mean no playing time at all for Callaspo. That's all...

I think you can just about bank on something like that happening....after all Melvin said they were still looking for bench help....and you know he just HAS to have his proven veteran toys.

God.....just being faced with the daily abuse of tolerating Bob Melvins moves almost makes me dread the start of the season.

Chad T, could very easily have a monster year, as opposed to another mild one as this year. The guys who know what it takes to make themselves better, usually do. My bet is Chad T is one of those guys. The last game of the year, was the Chad T that was missing all year. I bet he doesn't admire one of his homers next year.

This was ...um....interesting. The parts that caught MY interest the most have been highlighted/underlined.

D-Backs searching for mound help

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - General Manager Josh Byrnes sounded fairly optimistic Tuesday that trade offers he made to eight to 10 teams would land the Diamondbacks the pitching upgrade they want before baseball's annual winter meetings end Thursday.

"I guess I regard them (the talks) as making progress," Byrnes said. "No idea has fallen apart on us, but obviously we're still progressing at a slow pace. I wouldn't say anything has disappeared."

Texas was one of the teams with which Byrnes and his chief lieutenant, Peter Woodfork, had talked to, but any possible deal was stalled while the Rangers, who just re-signed starter Vicente Padilla, pursue another pair of premier free-agent aces in Barry Zito and Andy Pettitte. advertisement

Zito and his agent are believed to be waiting to see what it will take teams to sign former Giants starter Jason Schmidt, the top free-agent pitcher. And Pettitte has told the Rangers and his current team, the Astros, that he still hasn't decided whether he will pitch in 2007.

Astros manager Phil Garner said he thought Pettitte would be back and that the left-hander would turn down offers from the Yankees and Rangers to stay in Houston.

"The first few times I talked to him, he wasn't sure if he was going to play," Garner said. "The most recent conversation I had with him, he was, should I say it, you know, more than leaning, he's really considering coming back to play."

Whether the logjam at the top of the free-agent pile clears today or Thursday, Byrnes said he was more than ready to make a deal for a pitcher.

"We've told them (other teams) we'll take a prospect we like, a player with one year left before free agency or all points in between," Byrnes said, acknowledging the Diamondbacks initiated most of the offers still on the table.

Ideally, the Diamondbacks would like another solid starter to join the top three of Cy Young winner Brandon Webb, newly acquired Doug Davis and veteran Livan Hernandez, all of whom threw at least 200 innings each of the past three seasons. The more starters who go deep into games, the better the bullpen will be.

"Specific needs right now, we're probably a little more in tune to maybe adding another starter," manager Bob Melvin said. "We're just looking to add some depth, adding another guy that your team feels good about running out there every fifth day."

The focus is on pitching because Byrnes and Melvin are comfortable elsewhere.

"Our position players are fairly young, but with our ability to score runs and prevent runs, I think we are a team that can contend for the playoffs," Byrnes said.

"I guess we're close enough to feeling like if we can get a break or get better, we can win this thing. We're hopeful that we can make an improvement during the off-season and get the necessary luck to win it."

Boy, I have to say, this sure sounds like a "throwing a bunch of shit up against the wall and see what sticks" type of approach. Sometimes that works, other times you need to be more precise and focused. I'm not quite sure what to make of this.

8-10 teams????

Shocked

i find that hard to believe...it also sounds like they are pretty hopeful that what they have everyday will win this year......of course every team does but sounds like he is pretty confident....hope BoMel reads that and sees that they expect things this year!

Talk is cheap. Especially at the baseball winter meetings. It's hard to know what Byrnes is REALLY up to.

I'm not too worried about it. That's what the winter meetings are for. Bullshit sessions. The quotes are standard Byrnes - somewhat cryptic. You don't want to set your sights on one guy, because then the price goes up. Steinbrenner is the only one who can do that. Say you're talking to a bunch of teams to try to sway the market in your direction.

I would guess that 8-10 teams would be a norm for this time of year. I think it is just the "line casting" part of trading to see who nibbles and then begin talking.

As far as winning it with a little luck, I think it can be done. With one more strong pitcher and a little luck <good for us/bad for the Dodgers & Padres> we could take the division and from there it's a crap shoot.
