It's risky... but he is a month ahead of schedule, recovery-wise.
And a healed, healthy Mulder would be a steal at that price.
According to Levski, it's time to place our bets. I think Arizona is more than likely.

When did I say that?
I said it's time to trade Eric Byrnes. Maybe that means the same thing.

Todd Stottlemyre?
Different injury and different GM in AZ (saner offer?!?), but I can't completely shake the memory of Todd when reading about prospective Mulder offers.

Your prediction that Mulder stays in STL, that's all.
Mulder is also a huge gamble, I suppose. And TAP brings up a valid (chilling) point.
Who ISN'T for trading Byrnes at this point?
I mean, besides the FO.

I think Shoe's prediction is pretty solid, and pretty realistic
In another thread, i posted what i thought was my "break even point" at which point mulder would want too much for me to want to sign him. I believe mine was 4M in year 1, 8 in year 2, 8 in year 3 (team option)
Shoes is probably more realistic - and more than i think i would be comfortable risking... 13M guaranteed... i was thinking like 8M guaranteed.. i dont know... im still on the fence... i need more info - stuff we dont have access to...
i havent seen the medical reports, and have NO IDEA what prognosis he may have. |

have you seen anyone else's medical records?
and if you saw mulder's medical records, wouldn't that be all alien to you?
or you believe that the truth is out there, in his medical files?

At the above price I'd def jump on Mulder for that. I'd have to see medical reports like qudjy said, but I'm still remembering the Mulder of his Oakland years when he was one of my favorite young pitchers out of ST & AFL.
If Mulder returns to form & produces 75% of what he did in Oakland, this would be a grrrrreat signing.
If he goes the Russ Ortiz route... well, live, learn & then get luvs.

The Diamondbacks have been playing it very carefully this offseason, but there is room for them to take a relatively small percentage of their designated salary money, no more than about 10%, to take a calculated risk. If they are wrong, oh well, they knew they were taking a chance going in. If they're right, they've made a fantastic move. They won't be able to make a move that will land Mulder that didn't entail some risk if they truely expect to sign him. Let the medical folks examine the records. If there's a reasonable chance of Mulder returning to form, go ahead, Josh, and roll the dice. If there weren't some risk and doubt about Mulder's future, you would have to pay a hell of a lot more money to sign him as a free agent. You wouldn't have the money to do it. |

Yeah - you are absolutely correct - i wouldnt be able to make heads or tail of them - i should have said "medical records, and someone to translate them for me" - SORRY...
i didnt say it well, but i think you get the point - a good medical report is an important part of knowing what the risk of future injury, or complete recovery is... and therefore what you are willing to risk...

I was being facetious, obviously. The problem is that his medical records, no matter who studies them, will give you a rather incomplete picture, as they'll give you an estimate, probably a bad one, of how he'll recover from his surgery. all the medical records in the world can't predict how his shoulder will act up in a few months.
mulder is a big fn gamble that will explode in someone's face. i sure hope it doesn't happen in az

Why are you so sure? Im not challenging, just asking why your opinion is so strong in this case.
Roger Clemens had a similar surgery in 1985. From what i have read (i am the first to admit i am not in the medical field, and am not speaking from any first hand knowlege) the partial tear of the rotator is easier to fix and come back from than a labrum tear - why are you so sure that this will be a disaster?

The funny thing is, team's will be going through this same thing next season with Pedro. I bet he's hoping Mulder regains his health and form.

Arizona has been playing Moneyball all offseason, and I hope they get Mulder. Although, I'm not to sure on some of their other choices for previously hurt individuals

I'm cautiously optimistic about a Mulder signing. But it's worth noting that he was offered arbitration by StL. He's a 'B' rated FA so I think that means he'd cost us our personal 2nd rounder. |

Per the new CBA, Mulder won't cost AZ anything.

I don't know for sure what will happen to Mulder. I'm just very prejudiced against shoulder (as opposed to elbow) surgeries. Far too many pitchers crap out...

IMO, if it's in the press than it's not happening in PHX. I forecast another unexpected ( or two ) move(s) by the FO.
Just my WAG...

Josh has been cautious with his moves at Arizona, and he has looked to extract the best return he can for each move he makes. It would be out of character for him to sign Mulder. A Mulder signing would be very high risk, and in this market with others interested, he will be too expensive for the Diamondbacks, anyway. There is no way the Diamondbacks will be signing Mulder. |

Over the next week or so, if not already, I expect the Diamondbacks find ways to shore up their pitching staff within their budget that they'll like better than taking a chance on Mulder. |

It doesn't look like Mulder will be coming here
from todaysAZ Central
Quote: |
The Diamondbacks have talked with Valley resident and former Cardinals and A's ace Mark Mulder, but Byrnes dismissed the likelihood of a deal.
"It's hard to quantify, but I would have to say it's probably not the most probable scenario," Byrnes said. |
