We could be seeing plenty of Craig in 2007

The Padres have reignited their offseason.

Yesterday they bid more than $10 million for the right to negotiate with Japanese pitcher Kei Igawa, came to a preliminary agreement on a two-year deal with second baseman Craig Counsell, all but bid adieu to left fielder Dave Roberts and looked into trading for Red Sox left fielder Manny Ramirez.

Counsell should be in the fold within a few days, giving the Padres a potential leadoff man to replace Roberts. Although Counsell can fill a utility role, he is expected to replace second baseman Josh Barfield, who was traded for third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff last month. Counsell, playing mostly at shortstop and drawing a salary of $1.75 million, appeared in 105 games for the Diamondbacks this year and batted .255 with four home runs and 14 doubles.

Should Gonzalez follow him there, we'll suddenly find multitudes of former casual D-Back fans crying into their newly purchased Padre hats. Confused

BUT those Padres hats are a sham.... they are a "non-traditional" navy blue instead of the original yellow & brown! Horrors Wink
