Man...too bad Colletti isn't a GM of a Central or East team. We need more dumb trading partners. There is usually less chance of trade within the division.

Should the D backs trade for Manny to take over in LF? If so, who should they offer to Boston?

I know you were joking but just for fun I looked at our roster/salaries and it would appear that if we were to digest all of Manny's 2006 money we'd have to deal Tracy, Byrnes & Hernandez.

If we assumed that we could trade Tracy for Maholm and Byrnes for prospects and Hernandez and maybe Hairston for Manny <if we eat his entire salary>.

That would mean Manny's production <over Byrnes projection> would have to be greater than the difference between Hernandez & Maholm every fifth day and also make up for the difference between Tracy and likely Callaspo at 3B.

It'll never happen, but it wouldn't be an earth-ender for the D-backs if it did. [/code]

I would send Callaspo, Tony Pena, and Owings for Ramirez if Boston would eat some salary.

Then we could send Byrnes and Tracy to the Pirates for Gorzelanny or one of those guys we discussed earlier this month.

And let Barden earn his money at 3rd...

Just a thought.

I mean Manny consistently hits 40/130 in the AL...just think how well he'd do off the shoddy NL pitchers

EDIT: Plus his defense can't get much worse than Gonzo Laughing

Now it looks like he may be just be changing Sox...

Manny Ramirez-OF- Red Sox Nov. 28 - 3:51 pm et

ESPN's Peter Gammons believes Manny Ramirez will likely be traded within the next week and says the White Sox are a possibility.

Gammons says the Red Sox want three players back for Ramirez, and though the Giants may want him more than anyone else, they probably don't have enough talent to surrender to pull the deal off. Gammons also said that he expected a J.D. Drew deal to be finalized after Saturday's arbitration deadline and that he expected a Daisuke Matsuzaka signing to get done, though probably not until the last minute.

I'd prefer Manny over both Hairston and Byrnes, but it seems Arizona is too much in love with it's prospects to part with them for a big slugger. I know the plan is to win in 2008 and on, but this team is already talented enough to go .500 or better, just think with a consistent hitter how well they'd do.

Where are you going to fit that 20M a year into the budget?

Manny to Dodgers?

Ken Rosenthal wrote:
The Red Sox and Dodgers were scheduled to meet at midnight Eastern on Sunday to talk about Red Sox outfielder Manny Ramirez, according to a major league source.

The timing of the discussion made sense; by convening at the outset of the winter meetings, the Dodgers figured to get an early gauge on whether a Ramirez trade would be feasible.

If not, the team could move on to other pursuits — specifically, free-agent right-hander Jason Schmidt, who would not fit into the Dodgers' budget if they added Ramirez.

The Red Sox almost certainly would want right-hander Jonathan Broxton, a future closer, in a Ramirez package. The Dodgers, however, value Broxton for his late-inning potential.

Dodgers right-hander Brad Penny also figured to be discussed; he had a 6.25 ERA after the All-Star break last season, but pitched for the Marlins when Sox owner John Henry owned that club.

A package of Penny, third baseman Andy LaRoche and first baseman James Loney might entice the Red Sox. Penny, 28, is signed for $7.5 million next season and $8.5 million in 2008, with an $8.75 million club option for '09.

The Dodgers, however, might not want to part with top prospects if they're required to take on Ramirez's $20 million club options in both 2009 and '10, which would be the likely price for persuading him to waive his no-trade clause.

I have mixed emotions about Manny going to the Dodgers.

He may suck in LF, but he is still a GREAT hitter, and his offense more than makes up for his defense. Manny on the Dodgers makes them a serious force to be reckoned with, and probably a favorite to win the division in 2007

I like that Colletti would have to trade away yet more good young players, but in the short term, he can afford to do so. And the Dodgers ARE big market, meaning that a few winning playoff seasons back to back, especially one where they actually happen to advance past the first round, and perhaps to the W.S.,would really fatten their coffers, and help make them continually formidable.

I really would rather see LA fritter away their young players on more medicore talents, and not on bonafide difference makers like Manny.

So lets hope this deal falls through and they end up signing Gonzo instead.

(Manny to the Giants does not bother me, because I don't think he would make them a legit pennant contendor anyway, they are much weaker than the Dodgers to begin with)

GM says Giants want Bonds back. Sabean: Negotiations have 'picked up' between team, slugger.

Looks like SF has K'd on all of its efforts to replace Barry. Pucker up, Brian.

Realistically this was Barry's only true option in spite of Jeff Borris' self-serving statements to the contrary.

So if Barry goes to SF and Manny to LA, it looks like Gonzo may be playing east coast ball in '07. It's all about the O's. Surprised

He may not be a saint, but he's "absolutely" not a Devil.

12:52 p.m., from Buster Olney
A high-ranking Tampa Bay executive flatly denied an Internet report that the Devil Rays have made an offer to Barry Bonds, or even explored the possibility of making an offer to Bonds. "Absolutely not true," he said.

Bill Madden / NY Daily News wrote:
For the record, the Yankees and Mets can be counted among the 27 teams in a Daily News survey that have vowed no interest in Bonds, who needs 22 homers to break Hank Aaron's sacred all-time record. This despite the claim of Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, that he has numerous offers for his client. In fact, at the moment he has none. But that soon is likely to become one, at least if you believe Giants GM Brian Sabean who, after striking out in his attempts to replace Bonds by signing either Alfonso Soriano or Carlos Lee or trading for Ramirez, conceded yesterday he'll probably need to re-sign the surly, steroids-tainted slugger.

"We have a need for a left fielder and a cleanup hitter," Sabean said. "Does (re-signing Bonds) make sense from a baseball standpoint? Yes."

Too bad. What a statement baseball could have made about steroids if no club offered Bonds a contract, denying him the opportunity to break Aaron's record. That would be an even bigger statement than the Yankees setting the example for salary restraint.
