|
|
According to today's SF Chronicle, the Giants are in serious pursuit of Manny Ramirez to replace Barry Bonds. However, there are a few obstacles that stand in the way of SF succeeding with this move...
1- Ramirez is owed $14 million and $16 million, plus a total of $8 million in deferred salary, over the final two seasons of the eight-year, $168 million contract he signed with Boston.
2- A bigger potential obstacle for the Giants acquiring Ramirez is his right to veto any deal because he has more than 10 years of major-league tenure and five with the same club. He would have to approve San Francisco, and 10 months ago, after he reportedly demanded a trade, he told MLB.com, "I know the American League system. That's one reason I don't want to go to the National League."
3- Another obstacle is the talent Boston would seek in return. The Red Sox are seeking relief help (so are the Giants), a shortstop (Omar Vizquel is staying put) and prospects (the Giants' best hope).

Silly IMO... if SF wont give up Cain - why would BOS do this deal...
I could see LA forking over billingsly, loroche and kemp for him though - that might get interesting... |

I think Manny ends up in Anaheim after the Red Sox sign Drew.
Boston will get Santana and other parts. |

Anaheim seems like a good place for Manny. Not the pressure cooker Boston is, and Anaheim is really bringing in the latin players and courting the latin market, much like the NYM's are.

I don't think its the pressure cooker environment that is getting Manny down. He's done quite well in Boston despite outside pressures. |

it'd take cain or lincecum to get manny -- too high of a price for sabean to bump the team from 70 to 75 wins. but man, that'd be sweet for us, getting one of them out of the division.

What about us?
Should the D backs trade for Manny to take over in LF? If so, who should they offer to Boston? |

To be out from under a huge financial commitment, and put the money towards Drew and Julio Lugo. I think those are two pretty good reasons right there. What they get back in return (outside of contract relief) is not all that big of a concern to Boston. It ends up essentially being a Man-Ram for Drew and Lugo deal.

If AZ offered Byrnes and Callaspo and agreed to pay all of Manny's contract, I bet Boston just might bite. |

That's what I was thinking. They might want very little if the team taking him is paying all of the salary. OTOH, if the team wanted BOS to kick in ton of money BOS would want quite a bit more.

srsly. I'm so sick of the semi-annual "Manny demands a trade" or "will Boston trade Manny" articles. Wake me up when it actually happens.

The latest from ESPN, through Rotoworld
Manny Ramirez-OF- Red Sox Nov. 27 - 4:52 pm et
The Manny Ramirez are picking up momentum, reports ESPN.com, with one major league official saying he "wouldn't be shocked if the Red Sox traded him by Saturday,"
We would be. It's still hard to imagine the Giants as a serious contender for Ramirez, and the Angels and Mets aren't expected to be involved after already picking up outfielders this winter. The Dodgers are the one suitor that makes a lot of sense, as they have the money and plenty to give up in return. The Rangers and Padres are other possible fits, but it's doubtful Texas would surrender Michael Young and San Diego can't value him as highly as other teams because he'd be such a liability in Petco's spacious outfield.

OK, I can see the Dodgers trading for him.
Colletti is loaded for bear and he's insane. Crayze! And he's got talent to dangle, so Theo may agree to bend him over a couple of times... |

I just dont why BOS would trade him for anything less than 3 really good prospects. SF just doesnt have that. Sanchez, and nothing...
I see LA or LA as the places he could go...

You forget Lynxsuckem...
BOS would trade him for less than that, but the Dodgers are stupid enough to overpay by giving up just that...

he can be the proverbial PTBNL...
similar to JBonderman in the Jeff Weaver deal...
ok, Bondo was a bad example... even though he was a PTBNL...
