A comparison of league era's for the last five years. NL first then AL starting with 2006:

4.49 4.56

4.22 4.35

4.30 4.63

4.28 4.52

4.11 4.46

You hear people say that there is .5 to a run difference in era, but when you look at the source it is usually a baseball person like a scout or a sportswriter, neither of whom can trusted as to anything to do with actual baseball facts.

One of the hidden beauties of this trade...J. Byrnes managed to flip a pitcher he got off the waiver wire and a catcher he bought low on, for an upper-end of the roation starter, and a 23 yr. od prospect with more Ks than IP. In turn, D. Melvin got three solid-to-exceptional years out of a pitcher he signed as a minor league free agent and then included him in a trade that filled a bigger need (catcher). This is on top of Melvin turning two other minor league FAs (Podsednik & Kolb) into a season and a half of Carlos Lee, and young hard throwing pitcher (Capellian).

This is what good GMs do...particularly if they have to work within a tight budget. If you can steal one or two wins a season from each deal that you make, that's a much more cost effective way to make up games in the standings then shelling out $107 M over 6 years for a supposed impact player.

What are the thoughts on extending Davis? Originally I heard he was wanting 3/21MM but there are people saying that due to the crazy market, he's wanting more like 4/40MM.

In that same rumor thread you posted, it said that Ted Lilly is seeking 4 years, $36 M, and that so far teams have been willing to offer 4 years $34 M. Both are lefthanded pitchers of around the same age (Davis is four months older), so I would watch the Lilly situation closely for a clue as to how much Davis is going to get in the market.

Last year the Mariners signed Washburn, another lefty of similar age (he was 31 at the time) for four years $36 M. I peronally thnk Davis is the better pitcher, but it just goes to show it only takes one team doing something stupid to effect the entire markerplace.

Fan,

I haven't read BA about Eveland and have hardly ever been to the site. I stand by my statement that his slider is his better pitch. He has 4 good pitches, so if 2 are plus, that's very good. And if you want to judge his prospect status by his 60 MLB innings instead of his 380 minor league innings, there's not much more I'll have to say about him. There's more to the kid than the fat. I don't think he's ace material (nobody does), but he's more than a throw-in. Especially when he won't even make his one millionth dollar until 2008.

Apparently you haven't read my posts. I've never said that Eveland wasn't a good young player, or suggested that he was just a fat kid, or a throw in. In fact, I've said that I liked him, and even stuck up for him when his terrible run in the bigs was brought up.

So...I'm not sure what this post was about.

I had no idea that this place existed, yet another baseball forum to pass the time in. I'm going to have to do a lot more to sow seeds within the DBacks fan community lest I begin to be completely typecast as a BTF Lounger.

As for the trade, a definite two thumbs up from my point of view. I would go into more detail but I would basically be repeating all of the excellent analysis that's already been given. I'm just looking forward to the next round of deals to dissect.

hey dahlian, welcome to the baseball forum that doesn't suck. i've read your stuff on primer -- your insight is always welcome here.

the more i think about this trade, the more i love it. we were arguing earlier about whether JB should be trying to flip estrada for a vet pitcher who rocked, or a young rockin' prospect -- and he managed to do both.

krynzel, IMO, is probably a nice guy, used to be a nice prospect, and rather than have doug melvin have to sever ties with him, he got added as a throw in to the deal, so the dbacks can either find a use for him or cut him. and honestly, i'm not too concerned with what happens with that guy.

because WE GOT PITCHING!!! i really, really like the potential of this rotation. i think it's going to contend all year -- and by having 7 or so talented pitchers trying to get in the rotation, we dump whovever doesn't make the cut into the bullpen, and voila -- we have talented relievers who can go a couple innings at a stretch.

this move just made our rotation a LOT better, and our bullpen quite a bit better. the offense should be good for average, IMO, so if i'm JB, i'm pretty happy at this point, and i don't feel a need to make any more deals unless we just get bowled over.

except, of course, trading eric byrnes.

More JB pitching questions/answers?

Quote:
As it stands now, Eveland, Edgar Gonzalez, Enrique Gonzalez, Dustin Nippert and Ross Ohlendorf are among those who could compete for the last two rotation spots.

"I think our pitching is starting to set up well," Byrnes said. "We still see other ways to try to improve it."

One possibility: left-hander Kei Igawa, who was put up for auction by his Japanese team. The Diamondbacks are expected to submit a bid by Monday afternoon's deadline for the 27-year-old, who has three strikeout titles in Japan and is expected to fetch substantially less than the $51.1 million the Boston Red Sox bid for Daisuke Matsuzaka's rights.

from the AZRepublic

So, it seems that JB is still looking. The media says Wolf, Mulder and Igawa, but since we've never known what JB was REALLY up to until it happens, those three probably won't end-up in AZ. Of course, it's different with Igawa because of the public nature of the posting/turning in a bid process. So, all we know is that... Byrnes is still looking. AT someone, somewhere. Confused

Not a problem. My baseball related posts have been few and far between over the last few months as I've been out of the country since June. It's too hard to keep track of everything that's happening and offer opinions on players, trades and matchups when you can't even watch a baseball game.

Oh well, I'll be back in Phoenix in a few weeks and then the Bay area once school begins and I'll definitely have a more active presence here. I must say that from reading through past threads I'm liking the level of commentary and style of discourse here. I should admit, I never once visited the AZcentral boards so that's part of the reason I never knew that this community existed, but you guys are right, it definitely does not suck.

I actually thought you already posted here, and I just didn't know who you were. I don't read the lounge, so I don't know much about you other than what I see in the baseball threads. Good stuff man! Welcome aboard.

Cool, another Bay Area D-Backs fan. Cool

Dahlian, please feel free to join B.O.N.D. and I anytime we catch the D-Backs at Pac Bell Park (or whatever the hell they're calling it) next season. The two of us usually try to hit one game per series when they're in town.

The Rangers, Giants, Diamondbacks, Padres, Dodgers, Indians, Mets, Rays and Orioles are all trying to lure Mulder away from St. Louis, even though he probably won't be ready to pitch in April and there's no guarantee that he'll ever again be a top-of-the-rotation guy. He could pick a team soon.

By 2nd half 2007 or 2008? That's looking like contention to me. IF Mulder recovers. Hmm.

Maybe Mulder could sign one of those Deals Clemens got from Houston, prorated to when his season begins.

I may have to take you guys up on that. Come school time you'll find me in Palo Alto for the next year, but I'm always looking for an excuse to catch a game in the city. Last year I made it to one, but it was a gem. My birthday fell on the same weekend of the Dbacks series so they got me 10th row seats right behind home plate with all of the advance scouts on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with Brandon Webb on the mound making the Giants hitters look like frightened schoolgirls. Good times.

If it's not obvious from my previous post, for one more year I will be a student of Carlos Quentin's alma mater, Stanford.

I really don't see us carrying 5 OFs on the 25 man but I do like the Hammock flexibility feature. Maybe Callaspo, Clark, DaVanon and Hammock on the bench?

That leaves room for 12 pitchers.

I cant help but wonder about 3 recent transactions done by D-backs F.O

1. Hiring of Scouting Director, Tom Allison
2. Play by play commentator, Daron Sutton
3. Now this Davis for Estrada Trade.

All these 3 are between Milwaukee brewers and Diamondbacks.
Do they all go to the same Bar for drinks?
Is it Coencidence?

May be.

But i thought we should more careful with brewers, ever since Sexson trade. I still cant get over that rip-off
