Alright, this is one thing I think that Josh Byrnes really needs to change - that this team doesn't allow incentive-based contracts.
I understand sort of from a payroll perspective, but IMO, why would you not want players who are willing to base how much they make on their performance, especially in this era of the 5 years/65M deals?
To me, these types of contracts are win-win for the organization and the player.
I just don't get the reasoning behind this decision, and think that we are even further limiting what we can do on the FA market with our already limited payroll...

I don't really disagree with you, but just playing devils advocate for a moment....
As Levski said to me, they could be bullshitting, and it could just be negotiating tactics with Mulders agent. They don't happen to have any incentive deals at the moment, so why not say "it's a policy and we don't do them."
If it is a real policy, then I assume they do that because they want to know a fixed cost that they are dealing with. It might also be a way of enforcing a self discipline. If a guy is not stable enough to warrant a guaranteed contract, then they don't want that type of player.
But ultimately, I don't see the point of setting up policies that limit options. I personally like to have all my options available. If you trust in your own negotiating skills, there really should be ZERO limitations on the starting point for any negotiation.
If a risk player isn't worth throwing an incentive-based contract to then we shouldn't be talking to him anyway.
If we can't afford an extra couple of million on the backend to a player who overachieved a low-ball up front contract then our owners should think of a different line of business and sell the team. We have the Bidwells already and don't need a D-Rays look-a-like baseball team.

As much as I'd like to believe we have some owners who will be willing to pay money to win...I realize one of our owners was an agent, whose sole purpose was to make as much money as possible.
Mulder on an incentive deal will be fine, if he's okay to pitch this year. He's essentially worthless if he can't pitch until May, and even then, will he be effective?
