Seems like a self imposed punishment.

Josh Byrnes, didnt want to go free agent route.
But he probably realised that cost of trade for pitcher is too high.
If we want one of TOP of the rotation guy, we would have to give up, a blue chip prospect.
So we again look at free agency.
I wonder if losing a blue chip prospect is better than getting another russ Ortiz..
Any thoughts.........? |

"We haven't done that (offer incentive-based deals) and it's been helpful as a helpful, self-imposed policy of fairness," Byrnes said.
I'm hoping there's a typo there? Too many 'helpful's' in that sentance and he sounds like he's looking for words. Kind of comes across like he might be kind of confused why "we" don't offer incentives too. or maybe that's just my read.
E Byrnes sounds pissed off about his situation but maybe I'm just imagining that too. |

As I was reading it I starting thinking there was some posturing/back stepping on our position with Byrnes.
1-Don't give him the contract he want's
2-Let him make unseemly statements to the media
3-Trade him
Maybe it was just me hoping too hard. |

Outfielder Eric Byrnes, who is arbitration-eligible, expressed his displeasure Tuesday about not having received an offer for a multiyear extension to remain with the Diamondbacks.
"I'm not sure it's in the plans," said Eric Byrnes, who led the team with 26 home runs and 25 stolen bases in 2006. "The only thing I've heard has to do with a one-year deal, and you know as well as I that if it's one year and we're not in the pennant race by August, then I'm not going to be here. I'll be trade bait.

May be D-backs are keeping eric byrnes as insurance, just in case Young cant handle Center Field. But from what i have seen from last year, there were some web gems from Young. I think he would do fine.
JB has to use Eric Byrnes and Estrada as trade bait.
Let Scott Hairston play LF. His defense is better than Gonzo and Offesively is lot better than Gonzo and Byrnes and he earns only $300 K+.

1.) Hairston is NOT better than Gonzo defensively. Hairston is not a good left fielder. Gonzo did a good job getting to balls....(when he tried hard), he just had no arm.
2.) We don't know yet if Hairston will put up over .800 OPS if he gets to play every day in the majors. However ZIPS projections DO like him quite a bit.
.276/.334/.522 .856 OPS
With Park factors, playing in Chase field, Dylan has Hairston similar
.264/.333/.502 .835 OPS
Despite his poor defense, it would definitely be worth giving Hairston a shot at everyday LF and trade BOTH Byrnes and Estrada for pitching, if available. But in todays market, I have had to adjust in my mind just how much pitching you can get back for either or even both of those guys.

If we cant get Major league pitching, then we should get Pitching prospects (from AAA or AA)atleast that will help us in future, just like yankees did.

Hairston has better arm than Gonzo. How can that not be an upgrade ?

The Eric Byrnes situation is very reassuring. Now if they can only find a team for him.... |

According to TSWINDERS, who watched and scored every Tucson Sidewinders game, every ball hit to left field was an adventure, and he just held his breath every time a ball was hit to Hairston.
So yes, Hairston has a better arm, but his routes to balls, instincts in the OF, and ability to just go pick it are sorely lacking, and that all most likely adds up to more negatives than his better arm gives you.
I'd STILL rather see him out there in LF than Byrnes, and get some better pitching in return, we basically agree. But I don't think we should have very high expectations for an "upgrade" defensively if they stick Hairston in LF.

Doesn't Pittsburgh also need an outfielder?

Ya know.....I wonder if Josh Byrnes has been fielding alot of calls from other GM's interested in Eric Byrnes, and so of course JB needs to take a look at exactly what other teams might be offering for EB before he commits to a multi year contract.
Pittsburgh really does seem like a team that just might overpay for EB.
Byrnes for Duke or Gorzelanny!!!!
Fire it up!! |
