Miguel Montero and Chris Young to the Marlins; Dontrelle Willis to the Diamondbacks
The Mets want Willis, but it would take something close to overwhelming to pry him from Florida, and overwhelming has to start with a high-end catching prospect and center field prospect who are major league ready. That describes Montero and Young. The Marlins would have to believe Montero's catching skills continue to evolve to match his already superb hitting. This would be difficult for the D'backs because they love Young (they would prefer to move Justin Upton) and there have been indications they would deal starting catcher Johnny Estrada this offseason to make room for Montero. The Dodgers, with their elite farm system, could be players, as well, but their GM, Ned Colletti, is familiar with free agent Jason Schmidt from San Francisco, and L.A. also will be players for Zito. |
Sherman, you are a certifiable moron.

touche.
[edit]
btw, I wouldn't trade Young for Willis straight up. And I wouldn't trade Young and Montero (or Young alone) for Bonderman either.
Young is going to be that special. And Montero is going to be very very good.

I spit my drink reading that deal.
Clearly he has no idea what he's talking about...since we already have the true 2003 NL RotY. |

He's not even able to take the job from Snyder, and Snyder had better/comparable numbers at each level while being younger. You guys's hard-on for Montero is a tad unjustified. Montero might be good, but he'll always be a year or two behind Snyder in development, so we might a well move him while we can, and not him get Hairston'ed

Being stuck behind Snyder at catcher is SLIGHTLY different from being stuck behind a $10m slugger and the face of the franchise though.
Catcher is a position where you need help, Snyder aint gonna be starting 162 games this year, whereas a LF clearly could.

As shoe said before, Snyder and Montero had comparable numbers in the minors. Can they sustain that in Majors?
I have seen Snyder battting in major leagues and his major league hitting numbers are not impressive.
Montero is hyped well, by the organization and we havent seen enough of him in majors yet. Next year will be a good barometer to judge if montero is really worth the hype or not.

But if he's not, then we squander a perfectly good gyp-chip. If he fails at the ML level, then we're screwed because he would have to be a throw-in with other talent in any trade for him. If we can get something really (I emphasize really) worthwhile for him now, I say take the gamble and trade him. Catcher is a position where offensive production is often a bonus, so I think I'd be comfortable with moving Montero and seeing how Snyder handles the spot. But do we have any viable backup options?
pleeeease tell me juan brito was finally given the sadaam treatment. i don't follow the minor league rosters very well. |

gary,
It's not just the Montero hardon, it's that the deal would be Young AND Montero for Willis. The Montero thing has been debated a lot here. I think that because of Snyder, many of us would put Montero on the 'tradeable' list. I have no problems trading him, it is a position where we have nearly equal depth at the MLB level. However, I also wouldn't mind letting things work themselves out. If both Montero and Snyder live up to our expectations in 2007, they will be worth a lot more than they are now. |

I recently had a conversation with our man Josh Byrnes in which he described a daffy duck like scheme to replace the current center field grass with quick sand painted green and then lure Chris Young out there on the pretense of shaggin fly balls. He isn't going anywhere. |

That's good to hear. I'd like to make it through this offseason without trading any of our untradeables. Josh did it for us through the trade deadline, maybe he'll come through again. |

First off, Snyder was NOT younger than Montero at comparable levels. Second off, once you adjust for offensive environment in AA and look at their minor league records from high A and above, Montero actually has the more impressive minor league record.
Second, to address the claim that "Montero is not able to take the job from Snyder", my answer is WTF? When was there even any competition for the starting job b/w Montero and Snyder? During Montero's two starts in September?
See, I like Snyder. I'm not trying to bash him. I think Montero will have a higher ceiling. I also think that they'll form a very good young platoon.
But your statement that "Montero is not able to take the job from Snyder" is just ridiculous. Think.
