Good to see Gary's continuing his good-guy image.
Yankees are in the right on this one and if Gary wants to whip it out and see whose is bigger, he can sit out a year for no pay. My guess is NY will engineer a multi-year sign and trade.

Gary Sheffield was told Wednesday that the New York Yankees will pick up his $13 million option for next season, according to a newspaper report.
Sheffield said he was hoping to test the free-agent market and get another three-year contract, USA Today said in a story on its Web site.
"This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told the newspaper. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that."
It's possible the Yankees are positioning themselves to trade Sheffield, as several teams are reportedly interested in a player of his type. The New York Daily News reported Wednesday that at least a half-dozen teams -- the Angels, Orioles, Cubs, Giants, Astros and Rangers -- are in the market for a power-hitting corner outfielder, and that doesn't include the Red Sox and Mets, who could also use the help. The Yankees can now prevent Sheffield from going to such rivals without getting anything in return.

Yeah, sure, I want to give a multi-million dollar 3-year contract to a guy who will be 38 years old on November 18th; or trade for such a guy. Right!
The fact that he isn't willing to honor his current contract (giving the NYY a $13M club option for 2007) is just icing on the cake. Great: an aging prima donna and clubhouse cancer.
Sure want that on my team... NOT.

NEW YORK -- Gary Sheffield is still a member of the New York Yankees. For now, anyway.
The Yankees announced Sunday that they have picked up Sheffield's $13 million option for the 2007 season, but they are expected to trade him sometime this winter.
By exercising his option, the Yankees now control where Sheffield will play in 2007 instead of allowing him to choose his destination -- including Boston -- as a free agent.
He signed a contract for three years and $39 million before the 2004 season, but did not include a no-trade clause in that deal. Among the teams believed to be interested in Sheffield are the Phillies, Indians, Rangers and Tigers.
Sheffield, who turns 38 later this month, was limited to 39 games this season because of a left wrist injury. He batted .298 with six homers and 25 RBIs, and indicated he wants to play for three more seasons before retiring.
Last month, Sheffield told USA Today that he would not react well if the Yankees exercised the option and traded him.
"I don't know what they're going to do," Sheffield told the paper. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just [go] to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem. A big problem. I will not do this."
