The San Diego Union-Tribune today reported that Kevin Towers, SD GM, is still holding a grudge that he was beaten out for AZ GM by Josh Byrnes.
From the article:
Last November, the longtime Padres general manager was sitting in a resort near Phoenix, expecting that in a few days he would be announced as GM of the rival Arizona Diamondbacks.
The interview lasted nearly four hours. Towers was asked about his talent for unloading bloated contracts. He gave Moorad and Co. his insights on how Arizona could move its several bad contracts. Towers assessed Arizona's major league personnel. Its farm system. Its staff. He told Moorad what impending moves he would make as Arizona's GM.
Imagine how Towers felt a few days later when Arizona informed him it was hiring Josh Byrnes instead.
Towers returned to the Padres and told friends he felt Moorad had played him. More than once, he talked of wanting to beat the Diamondbacks more than any other team in the NL West.
The article suggested that it's very personal for Towers to beat AZ now, and wrapping up the division in Phoenix (the gift from 2nd base umpire Larry Poncino) was extra sweet for Towers.
I wouldn't be shocked to see him sign Gonzo out of personal spite to Moorad, even though Petco Park would be the worst possible stadium for Gonzo to play in. |
