PHOENIX -- Bench coach Jay Bell would like to return to the Diamondbacks next year, but in a different role.
"My intentions are to come back in the same type of capacity that Walt Weiss is doing for the Colorado Rockies," Bell said Saturday. "He's an advisor/instructor/good guy to have around/mentor type of guy. During the season, he hangs out with the infielders, deals with them, talks with them about scenarios and different ways to play."
Weiss' official title is assistant to the general manager, and in addition to attending home games, he's around a month during the season visiting the organization's affiliates.
Bell, 40, played infield for 17 years in the big leagues before retiring after the 2003 season. He returned to uniform as bench coach under Bob Melvin in 2005. With three young children at home, he no longer wants to be on the road so often.
"It gives me more time to spend with [my wife] Laura and the kids," he said. "When I was growing up, I don't remember my dad missing any of my Little League games, and so for me, that's important."
Bell informed Melvin of his decision Friday and plans to speak with general manager Josh Byrnes about it soon.
While wanting to speak with Bell first before commenting, Byrnes said Saturday that he would be "very happy to have Jay remain in the organization."
Hitting coach Mike Aldrete said last week that he had decided to not return next year in order to spend more time with his family. The fates of the rest of the staff will be announced next week. |
Well, from what I've heard elsewhere:
Chip Hale moves to be the new Third Base Coach
Carlos Tosca will become the new bench coach
and a new Hitting Coach will probably be brought in from elsewhere.

So you want him putting the stop sign to Chris Young every time he has a chance to score?

The biggest benefit that I can think of having Hale as bench coach is Melvin possibly becoming more of a puppet-type manager. I just hope we can see Hale's lips moving because that would inevitably mean a change in managerial style and increase in wins. |

I'm pretty sure Grace wants the job, based on some comments during a game with SF where he was explaining how to hit Steve Kline...by looking for the slider, and only swinging at the one that starts in on the hands (which ends up over the plate).
When Thom asked him why doesn't he tell Gonzo that, he said "That's Mike Aldrete's job."
It seems like he knows quite a bit about hitting, but there are probably lots of more qualified candidates that aren't going to call for a slump-buster when a player starts falling into bad habits at the plate.

I wonder if becoming a hitting coach would be a path for Grace to become a manager someday.
I think he WOULD probably like to be a manager, but I get the feeling he doesn't really feel too keen on going down to the minors to manage and work his way back up to the majors that way.
But he could be some major league teams hitting coach for a couple of years, stay in the majors, and build a coaching resume, perhaps making it more likely some team would hire him as manager.
I don't know if thats how these things work though. |

I was thinking the same thing, but your lightning-fast fingers beat me to the post.
Grace's goal is to be a MLB manager, preferably with the Cubs or D-Backs, but w/o paying minor league dues. I'd think onfield coaching with rave reviews might help him accomplish that.

And lord knows the Dbacks need a hitting coach that actually does something besides nail tires to the wall.

That makes sense to me. We know he wants the manager job but there is no way he'll do a minor league job. |

Gracie has lived the MLB lifestyle too long to return to the long bus rides and Motel 6 stays in rinkydink towns.

Grace and Williams both wouldn't make it as managers, or everyday coaches. They'd have trouble with the 2 opposing thoughts concepts: such as guys not being as capable, and mentally prepared and into the game as they were, natuarally. Watching guys take things for granted, while at the same time, still needing those guys you need to win, and accepting that's they way they are. This would drive Matt W, to murder, and Grace to wonder why the guy doesn't play for him. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird couldn't handle it, for 2 examples.
Now that being said, I would probably hire a hitting coach that Matt W. and Grace can work with and not let egos get in the way. Hopefully they're allowed in on that process, both those guys knew how to hit, and be prepared. Maybe Bomel's the guy, at manager, now that things are about to change huge without Gonz around too.
Now, I liked Gonz, he was not overrated as top tier hitter/table setter person etc...but the team was built and managed around him the last few years, and with these new guys, the change in leadership/direction is now finally happening. Its going to be a great offseason, to see how byrnes designs this team now, for the next 10 years.

If Matteh was made hitting coach, they'd be the Texas Rangers. If Gracey was made the hitting coach, they'd be the New York Yankees 2006/Boston Red Sox 2005.

Tosca to the Marlins
Well, with Tosca headed to Florida, it looks like Chip Hale could be the new bench coach. I like the idea of Hale being more than just a 3b coach.

tosca to the marlins? aren't the marlins the team that fooled us with the hidden ball trick? if i was florida, that event would make me stay the hell away from terrero and tosca both.

Or maybe he thinks he won't look as good in Sedona red?
But this wouldn't have happened if Colangelo was still in charge...

i can't believe kendrick! first, he takes away our bankruptcy! and then he makes us lose out on having carlos "the human windmill" coaching 3b!
there goes our shot at beating the dodgers record, and having 3 people tagged out at the plate on the same play someday.

Tosca leaves Diamondbacks for Marlins
Nick Piecoro
The Arizona Republic

The Diamondbacks are still without a replacement for former bench coach Jay Bell.
That's because the man they had tabbed as Bell's successor, Carlos Tosca, informed the Diamondbacks on Friday that he was accepting the same position with the Florida Marlins.
Tosca, who spent the past two seasons as manager Bob Melvin's third base coach, is said to have been a mentor to new Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez.
The Diamondbacks could have denied Tosca the opportunity to interview but didn't.
"We could have stood in the way," General Manager Josh Byrnes said, "but we decided that's not really the right thing to do."
Chip Hale seems to be a candidate to become bench coach. |

Wow, This happened on Friday, and I never heard it. Well, I wish Carlos Tosca the best of luck out in Florida, but once again, the D-Backs are just letting people go...
I just hope that they block any possible requests for Chip Hale

The likelyhood of Gracie getting the oppourtunity to coach this year just keeps getting better and better.
Personally, I think that letting all these guys go is a good thing. This is a "New Regime" right? Out with the old, in with the new. Obviously, our minor league coaches know their stuff, give them a shot. Ask Chip Hale who the best coaches were at AAA. Don't we have Bret Butler as a 'A' level manager? He could get a call. |

It's all about who teams are asking to take. Tosca wasn't anything great so they won't stand in the way. Doing things like that should keep us in favorable light with other teams as well. |
