Sorry again if this is a simple question, I don't know anything about Minor leagues:

What would be a decent-to-good timetable for Parker to move up in the system? A year at Low A, High A, AA, and AAA? Does it usually take 3-4 years for the HS arms to get up there?

Well, pitchers usually take longer than hitters to progress. A highschool pitcher will inherently take longer to develop then a college guy. He should spend at least 4 years in the minors. He cant throw sliders for the first 2 years. They are bad for a developing arm to throw and the organization wants him to work on his secondary and third pitches. Scherzer took part of 06, all of 07 and probably most of 08. Scherzer was a college senior when he was drafted.

Im sure shoewizard or his son ( Razz ) may chime in regarding your post as well.

Thanks man. So how long are they are under contract then? Does it start once they hit the majors, or what?

Ok, I numbered my bolds so this would be easier:

1) TINSTAAPP and all, I don't believe Jarrod SHOULD spend 4 years, but it's a solid timetable to go by. I would prefer to see him in three.

2) Um... Justin... his secondary pitch IS his slider. His primary is his 92-98 MPH heater, secondary is his slider, and third is his changeup, which apparently has made the most progress out of all of his pitches. The organization isn't so much against not wanting him to throw the slider to protect his arm as they are wanting him to throw the bread-and-butter fastball/change more often so that he can work on getting consistent movement on his mechanics and pitches, gain more control for both of them, and also work on the velocities of the pitches to maximize their effectiveness.

3) Scherzer was drafted in June, 2006, and wasn't signed until June, 2007. He spent some of the time in b/w Mizzou and Visalia (A+ ball) by playing for an independent league team. So to take Scherzer as an example for a typical College draftee might not be the smartest of ideas...

I don't expect Parker to make it to the majors as fast as Beckett (216 IP)

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/Josh-Beckett.shtml

Philip Hughes (275 IP in the minors, on careful pitch count) might a good comp

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/H/Philip-Hughes.shtml

Here's hoping of course that Parker stays healthy

I've been thinking Hughes as well. It's also a good comp in my mind b/c of the curveball Hughes throws that the Yanks didn't let him unleash until later in his minor league compare, which appears to be the same direction the Snakes are going w/ Jarrod's slider.

Agreed. It'd be great if he could develop into a successful fastball-changeup pitcher warranting a call-up that has a nasty slider in his back pocket.

KG had an article for you BP subscribers that broke down Parkers last start.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=7395

For those who don't subscribe, here is a summary from a scout:

Quote:
“I haven’t seen him before, and I was expecting a little more polish out of him. I certainly like his arm, but his breaking ball was below average today, although I liked the spin he generated, so there’s potential there. This is just his second pro start, and you have to give him credit for pitching in a full-season league right now when a lot of kids like him would be in extended [spring training]. That cutting movement on his fastball hinders his command of the pitch, but once he gets a better feel for it, it’s going to be a real weapon.”

Not to call you out, but KG did notice a handful of sliders in his last start.

Jarrod actually went today (Tuesday). The Hawks host two 10:30 AM starts per year so schools can attend games for field trips, today was one of those. The Hawks won 8-4, and I hear Parker looked good. Today was one of only two games I plan on missing all year (the big boy job takes precedence).

Mick, our next homestand begins May 2 and runs for a week and a half or so. If the rotation stays as it is now, Jarrod will pitch twice during the next homestand. It is rumored that AJ Hinch will be in town to watch a couple of our games, and I would bet Parker is on his list of games. I will try to remember to post back here the days that he is scheduled to pitch once I get the info. If you come up to watch a game, I would like to meet a fellow dbacks bullpen poster!
