I'm definitely in favor of Hale as the next D-Backs manager. I'm not sure however, about his value to the franchise and the players as a 3B coach for the big club, or managing the AAA players. But it's just a matter of time until those AAA players are up to the D-Backs, so maybe it makes a lot of sense to get him up here and be an understudy of Melvin.

Anyway, I can't think of a better reminder to be successful, a better fire under Melvin's ass, than having Chip Hale staring him in the eye every game.
Even more importantly, whether it's overt or not, Hale will be there for his players; Conor, Quentin, Drew, Callaspo, Young... and whoever else makes the leap.
And every half inning he's right there to knock some sense into Melvin's head.

I could see Brenly in SF too. No way Piniella ends up there. The reason he left Seattle was that it was too far away from his family in Florida. If he manages, it'll be on the east coast.
Dead on, David.

Piniella takes self out of running for Giants job
As much as Lou Piniella would have loved to manage the San Francisco Giants, he took himself out of running for the job Friday strictly because of geography.
Piniella, who is broadcasting the American League Championship Series for Fox, lives in Tampa, Fla., and was reminded this week on a long cross-country flight of one of the main reasons why he left the Seattle Mariners in the first place.
"The whole situation is this: Lou has a very long-standing relationship and friendship with [Giants GM] Brian Sabean," Piniella's agent, Alan Nero, said in a phone interview Friday. "When the opening came up, he was interested. He has tremendous respect for the organization and a lot of respect for Peter [Magowan] and ownership. He was intrigued by the opportunity and happy that they considered him."
For those that fantasized about the possibility of Lou taking the reigns in AZ, you can forget about it.
