To select our best and worst teams of all time, we opted for a more mathematical approach. To equalize the measurement of team performance across eras, we've created the G-score (as in "greatness"), basically a zippy name for what statistical connoisseurs call standard deviation. The score measures how teams stack up against their peers in a given year.
Standard deviation also adjusts for periodic changes in scheduling balance over the years, such as the breakdown of each league into two (and then three) divisions and interleague play. It covers the modern era of 1901 to 2005; omitting the World War II years of 1942 to 1945, when many star players served in the military, as well as the strike years of 1981 and 1994.
For example, two of eight American League clubs in 1927 posted winning percentages below .400, leading to a league-wide standard deviation of .123 percentage points above and below the average .500 record. The Yankees' .714 winning percentage that year was .214 above the average, while a "standard" club was no more than .123 over. In other words, the Yankees were 1.74 times better than a "typical club," or a little less than twice as good (hence a 1.74 G-score).
Team: Arizona Diamondbacks
Year: 2004
Record: 51-111
G-score: -2.158
Just three years after a World Series title, the D-backs sank to the worst season of their seven-year history. Even the inaugural expansion club of 1998 won 14 more games. The lone bright spot was star pitcher Randy Johnson, who lost out on the Cy Young Award despite being the dominant pitcher in the league. Pitching for a team that went 60 games under .500, Johnson could muster only a 16-14 record. |

I'm sure the 2003 Tigers are on that list too.
And I'm sure that the 2006 Tigers don't give a rat's arse about that list.
Sometimes, useless baseball statistics are just useless baseball statistics.

Hmmmm, three years later and the Tigers appear headed to the WS. Three years after 2004 for the D-Backs would be....

And speaking of that chat, this post made me giggle like a school girl

RJ (Pittsburgh): What should the Mets do with Shawn Green for '07? a) He should be DFA'd b) He should be platooned c) He should be traded for something, anything |
RJ (Pittsburgh) = Robert S (Phoenix)?!

I feel the Dbacks just gave the Mets the baseball equivalent of Jose Lima's herpes

Here's a little something I posted on the SnakePit the other day:
Detroit: 2003, 119-game losers
2003 -> 2004: 29 game improvement
2004 -> 2005: 1 game drop
2005 -> 2006: 24 game improvement
Arizona: 2004, 111-game losers
2004 -> 2005: 26 game improvement
2005 -> 2006: 1 game drop
2006 -> 2007: ????
We can but hope.
